Weeks of this nonsense and I finally left Fi about 30 days after I started. Left with no other choice, I'm in the middle of suing Google. So, in short, out $1,300, had to switch service, frozen Google Pay account, and a lawsuit.

I don't know what their deal is, but your experience is far from unique when it comes to dealing with Google's device sales and trade-in people. It's like they don't actually want to sell devices, so they deliberately do as bad a job as possible. As a long-time Nexus/Pixel user, I've heard so many of these stories that I bought our last two Pixels from Amazon and when I had a Fi account it was tied to a Google account I used for nothing else.

They ask for the address where you plan on using the phone the most and assign a number local to that address. It doesn't have to be your billing or shipping address--if you want a number from $randomtown, put in City Hall as your usage address.

With Google Fi, there maybe another way to select your own phone number. I think they allow port in of a Google Voice number. So you could use your existing mobile number to get a GV number. I remember the last time when I got a GV number, they let you choose every digit in the number as long as they are available. I live in 909 area code in California. I picked the exact same phone number in North Carolina with 919 area code. It really confused people when I call them on my 919 number LOL.

I originally got a Fi phone as a second line since my primary line was Sprint paid for by work, then moved mrs. boerne to Fi from ATT because we had a lot of international travel and she wanted the LTE. My original AC was 512. She wanted a 830 area code, and we had no problem doing that. It was super easy. We have traded in phones, and ported numbers and never had problems like was mentioned upthread. I suspect there is more to that story. However we have never traded via a third party, we always went directly through Google Fi. Once we had LTE connection problems in Copenhagen. They were very good in troubleshooting that for us so our experience has been very positive. Even LTE in multiple African countries in 2018. A life saver. Now if only Fi would support an esim on an iphone. If it does please share.

I have a 212 number with them. I put in Las Vegas as my home address since state taxes there are 4% vs. something like 18% in New York State.

I have been called by AT&T for an Ohio state tax audit. My MiL is on our cell plan with an Ohio address. The tax for her line is less than $3 per month.

I have been using two phones for years, an older iPhone and Pixel (for FI). Going to finally upgrade my iPhone. How have the dual sim iPhones been? Is one still limited on the networks. As I vaguely recall an old drawback to the iPhone was FI couldn't fully utilize all the available networks or something of that nature.

Google FI on iPhone is limited to T-Mobile as the only FI partner, and currently 5G is not supported on iPhone by FI.
That said, dual-sim works great. You could do what I did and run Visible and Fi simultaneously on the same iPhone.

I wasn't aware you could not get 5G on the iPhone with Google Fi - which would explain the conclusion of a recent Google Fi review I read where their summary was "MVNO service and quality at a full service carrier's price".

I'll pass.

Thanks! Are there similar limitations outside the U.S.?

I don't know for sure, about 5G I'd assume it likewise wouldn't work. However for data roaming, you can choose between any number of T-Mobile carrier partners in the network selection settings of your iPhone while abroad. In India for example, I was able to roam on AirTel and Vodafone.

This data point might be of interest to a small subset of Fi-using FTers:

I signed up to Fi while I was living in the US. I moved to Europe and because of SARS-CoV-2 haven't set foot on US soil since 2019. I've also not been anywhere else much since early 2020 and so haven't made much use of Fi. This month, I was able to transfer my Fi service and eSIM to a new Pixel 5 without any issues.

I keep reading that excessive roaming with Google Fi can lead to problems. What if I have two lines in my account where line 1 is always roaming, but line 2 is always in the US say, my girlfriend? Will this still lead to problems with Google?

I will say that having the TMobile 55+ package for $45/line for two lines including unlimited everything, tethering, 5G, inflight Wifi and Netflix is hard to beat as a total value, and it seems we can deal with some of the signal problems at home by using wifi calling on TMobile which was not an option with ATT. The problem I had with both ATT and Tmobile on my iPhone 7+ and now my 12 Pro Max, is the constant cutting in and out, signal drops, silent pauses etc. Both are/were bad, but ATT was marginally worse.

If I switched to the Fi service, I would still be on the TMobile network, but I would lose all the extra included features. Perhaps Verizon is a better signal, but our phones don't work on their network.

Can you roam in Asia with your TMobile 55+ package? If so, what are the rates like?

It seems like Google Fi is quite competitive and I'm strongly leaning on signing up for use in Europe and Asia.

I can roam for free at 256kps, plus 25c/min voice, but I would never do this....before departure I will get an e-sim from my regular outfit in Thailand and use data only on that SIM while turning off voice services.

I have given up on the Google Fi concept if 5G is not possible, but TMobile's poor coverage is driving me crazy so I am trying to figure out if it's worthwhile switching to Verizon or will I just have the same frustration with them.

T-mobile has free international roaming at 128Kbps or 256Kbps (depends on the plan). But you could also purchase international data pass for LTE speed. 1 day (500MB) for $5, or 7 days (5GB) for $35, or 30 days (15GB) for $50. It is actually cheaper than Fi's basic data plan @$10/GB. Now if you travel a LOT, then the $50/line unlimited Fi plan is great!
