so I got hangouts to work with same sign in as fi, thanks, and voice has to be different profile, but hang outs solves my prob for wifi calling that fi does not let me do in iphone, thanks again. Seems like google and apple are perhaps working together for a change.

Fi is a unique service and a really cool concept, but when I was living in the US and using it as my regular carrier I couldn't help but feel like I was paying to be a beta tester sometimes.

Glad you got it working!

Nov 2019, used Fi flawlessly in Morocco, Portugal, and Spain. Best travel sim I ever used. Came back home and went back to verizon, decided I liked Fi so much, have switched the whole family over. So far so good. Teenage daughters seem happy, so must all be working. Really look forward to traveling again and not worrying about switching sims, and everything just working right off the plane. Could dial numbers exactly as they appear etc. We are on IPhones, hopefully google will allow for the cell switching service and WI-FI calling soon. There is a work around to use google voice for WI-FI calling anyways.

Can confirm excellent coverage in Egypt, from Cairo to Abu Simbel. I also had a T mo data sim in the physical sim slot, Pixel 3 XL, when I didn't want to spend $10 a gb. The work around works. I have my primary gmail, with 2FA, for most things, but I made a work gmail years ago, and that has my google voice number. So I just switch when I need to. Switching may become easier as TMo absorbs Sprint, at least in the US. Also RCS may get better for Android. My work phone is an Iphone, but I am platform agnostic.

Ok new problem for you gurus out there. I am using google fi on an Iphone xs, I am using the esim (don't think that matters) my issue is the voice mail, it sends me text message of the voice mail and leaves the recorded version in the app. I really would like to be able to save my voicemails as an mp3 file for example, anybody know how to do this?

If you log into your fi account online I'm pretty sure you can see the voicemail files there. From there you can download or save to Google Drive. I remember doing this myself a few years ago.

I am using Pixel 3XL on Fi, and I don't see anywhere in the Fi website that you could see your voicemail. I think the only place you could find voicemail recording is on your phone and there is no native way to download the file.

In the native phone/voicemail app, if you have a voicemail selected, at the bottom of the options is "Send to..." which lets you share the MP3 with an external app.

I have no such options, I am on IOS, I contacted google support, a specialist is going to email me, which leads me to believe there is not a solution to this at the moment

Oh so I was trying to find that and did not see that option. Then I try to actually play the voicemail. That "Send to ..." option will only show up after I play the voicemail and it gets loaded to the phone. Usually I never play the voicemail.. just read the transcript. I guess this will only work for Pixel's native phone app.

so google fi support confirmed that ios does not have the same feature that android has for saving, forwarding, etc. when I did a search on this, somebody suggested using google "take out" as a way of downloading your data, I can confirm I did this and was able to download the mp3 voicemail. it is a big pain in the ..., but for those that REALLY want to save a voicemail on ios, this will work.

Can you use iPhone's screen recording setting to record a video of you playing the voicemail? You could extract the audio part from the video afterward.

I still LOVE Fi for their international capabilities. I feel they are hands down the best US carrier for people who travel overseas. That said, the reception on t-mo or sprint can be sketchy in certain areas or in buildings. Also, even FI's unlimited plan goes into a hard throttle when you reach 22GB, rather than a simple deprioritization that T-Mo proper has at the limit.

I've now solved this problem:
  • I've moved Google FI to my esim (you can do this now on Google or Apple devices)
  • I've signed up for Visible, which is an MVNO on Verizon which costs $25/month for unlimited (albeit at times deprioritized) data.
Domestically, I now experience better reception in most places I go due to being on the verizon network for Data. My FI sim holds my primary phone number and SMS. When I go overseas, I just need to turn off the Visible sim and I still get to experience the full speed LTE FI is so great for.

Meanwhile, my FI is now set to the Flexible plan, so this 2-carrier combo is costing me LESS than Fi's "Unlimited" plan.

The esim and sim do not work at the same time right? Like if you are on Verizon data, you don't get calls and text? You have to manually switch between the two?

EDIT: Answering my own question. It looks like you could have both active if you have a Pixel 3A, 3A XL, or a Pixel 4. I have a 3 XL and I can only have 1 sim active at a time.

Does Visible give you full LTE unlimited tethering or does it restrict you to slower speeds or impose a cap on tethering?

Does it include voice and text?

Is it an eSIM?

bukzin Jun 19, 2020 12:05 pm

Visible uses a standard SIM card, don't think they offer eSIM's now

I have read your can only tether one device to it
but there may workarounds
Their service does include unlimited
voice and text.
