Has anyone tried Google Fi on an iPad? Would it be weird to use it in an iPad and not say, on a phone?

Use it how? iPads can’t place calls or use messaging functionality, except for FaceTime/iMessage... unless connected to a nearby cell phone.

You can use data-only Fi SIMs on an iPad. Many people who use Fi on their phones add these on for tablets and other data-only decides since they carry no additional monthly fee - just pay for data usage.

Ah, I did some digging. Looks like I can only get a data-SIM with existing Fi service. :(

I'm currently on T-Mo, but was looking for a solution that would work for a tablet internationally.

I do exactly that - T-Mo in US, and then Google Fi on my iPhone and iPad internationally. And if I want iPad data in the US, I just unpause Fi while I'm still here.

Hmm, I thought Google was cracking down on users only using Google Fi internationally and pausing when they return to the US?

Isn't T-Mo Data Pass cheaper than Fi? $35 for 5G or $50 for 15G. Unless you just want like 1G or 2G of data.. but then you have to get the phone/txt $20 too, so that would have push you over $30 anyway.

I think for the usecase of people who ONLY use data while traveling, then yes the T-MO data pass is a smidge cheaper than FI. That said, T-Mobile has RIDICULOUS roaming packages.

If you buy that 15GB for $50.... and use .01MB domestic, and .02MB internationally,
T-Mobile WILL threaten to cancel your account, because they simply because you used over 50% roaming overseas in a period. Complete BS and STUPID for a plan specifically for international roaming.

FI is much more sane in terms of roaming.

Yeah, I actually got one of the threatening email from T-Mobile two months after I switched from AT&T to T-Mobile. I switched in December and had a vacation in Europe over the X'mas/New Year break. In January, I got that email saying that if I kept this up, they will cancel me LOL. So I think okay, if you think I used too many oversea roaming, I just have to use MORE in states. So I try to use as much data as possible locally (free unlimited anyway) even if I have WiFi! Haven't got that email ever since.

But I think for Polytonic it should be fine as he is regularly on T-mobile in the states already. There is really no added benefit to try to get Fi data plan on his iPad.

Yeah, I might just add Magenta or whatever they're calling the new 2x speed international service nowadays, but considering I only go international 3-4 times a year (I guess more if you count Canada) the extra $30/month seems excessive.

Well, I'm still alive. I really don't use a ton either way.

I like the flexibility of the multiple SIMs. I’m taking my extended family to Europe over the summer. I love not having to use dial through services and can just places international calls from Google. The fact that the international call rate in the US is so cheap that I don’t worry about dial through setups in an another plus. I carry an iPhone and look forward to the day that I can access Sprint towers on my iPhone.

Anyone else still holding a gift card balance?

Like many here, I got in to Fi with the Pixel 3 offer in Nov. 2018, buy a phone and get travel gift card credit to match the phone cost. These credits could be redeemed for WN, DL, AirBnB, Hotels.com gift cards.

Rather than converting right away, I've been redeeming gift cards as my travel needs arise, some on WN, some on DL. And a year later, I still have a few hundred dollars credit.

I've seen some general advice that with the current situation that many companies - travel companies in particular - are facing, now isn't a great time to be holding gift cards. If the company files bankruptcy, the cards might become worthless.

Does anyone have any insight to Tango Card Inc as a company? There' the ones storing the credit balance that not yet been converted to specific gift cards. They're still private, but I can't tell enough about their business model to know if they might be at risk. If there is risk there, does it outweigh the risk of DL and/or WN ending up in chapter 11 reorg? Or should I just trust Google to make things right if Tango goes under?

I use Fi since 2 Years in Germany and I never had any kind of issures anywhere. Also no terminating nothing.

Now Google extend your billing you need to pay up to 60 Deys due to corona.

I also have 2 other Fi simcards as a reserve.

My newest issue: Thursday night my new Nexus 6 (~month old) stopped charging thanks to an issue with the USB port. Ordered a Qi charger for next day delivery -- I can't go into a holiday weekend without a phone! Google's shipping me a replacement, but no tracking info has posted yet. I was planning to port my number over this week, since my Straight Talk plan renewed the day before the Project Fi invite arrived. And I'm going to Canada next week, so I need to get off ST before doing that. But I'm not happy about the idea of having to port to the defective Nexus 6 and then do an IMEI update once the new phone arrives. Argh...unwanted headaches!

(Charging this weekend was ridiculous because I was on the go. I'd get the phone & Qi matched up and then rubber band the whole thing in place so it would charge in my purse.)

Did someone of you tryed to activate the sim outside of Amerika?

When using the Fi data SIM in a iPad can’t you make calls with WhatsApp, Viber, Hangouts, etc?
