Yeah will it do turn by turn navigation to any of the saved POIs from within the app?
Or will it at least transfer that POI to Apple or Google Maps for the navigation?
In other words, does it do more than be a My Maps viewer app? Does it show your current location relative to the POIs at least? Or just let you view your My Maps, scroll, pinch-zoom through them but that's mainly it?

It does show your position on the map.
It transfers to Google Maps for Navigation, and you can navigate to a POI (again, through Google Maps). I don't know about Apple Maps.
It is essentially a viewer, but you can do some editing. The editing is cumbersome.
Honestly, it is free. Give it a try. If you don't like how it works, uninstall it. No harm, no foul.

Quick run down:
* it lets you toggle layers on and off
* it allows you to push locations to iOS Map, Google Map (Web), and Google Map (app)
* it lets you add/edit/delete POI
* it shows your position on the its own map
* it uses the same icons that you assign when you create the map in Google
Except for navigation, it basically does everything that I expect it would, and I don't mind it pushing nav to another app. Often I'm using it when I'm walking in a city, so I don't necessarily need nav.

Sorry, there are two different apps we're talking about, both of which apparently open your custom My Maps.
1. New My Maps by a third-party for iOS which opens the new My Maps
and
2. My Maps from Google for Android.
Actually I don't have any Android devices so my questions about navigation was really more for #1, not so much #2.
Hope though that Google brings My Maps to iOS too.

How much do you pay for that flight and that hotel? The beer in the bar while traveling? And yet a $5 app that can save you hours is something that hits the level of "hate"? Why would anyone create a great app if they couldn't be paid when people obtained it?

As I always say, I am my mother's son. (She grew up during the Depression...)
With apps, usually there is a free app that will do enough of what I want, so that's why I do not like to pay. This is an example of where a paid app fills a void, but often one can avoid that.

Maps, grrrr.
I have an Android phone and use GPS and Google Maps for in-car navigation to a particular destination. No problem with that.
But I am a long time user of Microsoft Streets and Trips on my computer and have a master Chicago-area map with hundreds of locations (mostly restaurants) push-pinned. There''s apparently no Android app that cane open an MS S&T map file, and I have on several occasions researched multi-step map file conversion strategies with no success. I've exported text files and Excel files and tried to convert them to some kml or other type of file that can be opened with Google Maps. So far, I can see no better alternative to typing hundreds of place names and addresses into Google Maps by hand, i.e., recreating my master map from scratch. If anyone has a solution to this problem, please let me know; I'd be very grateful!

1. Export GPX file from MS S&T
2. Convert GPX to KML at gpx2kml.com
3. Import KML in Google Maps

Made me chuckle

And now, there's no way to contact him.
Looks like he can't or won't fix it.

Yes, and now he went and fixed it.
Look, sometimes his app breaks. And then he fixes it. I guess he takes it down while it is broken. My guess is that this app doesn't pay his bills and it is just a side hobby, so he does not/cannot fix things immediately like some developers too. I am sorry that I recommended an app that occasionally breaks, but I thought you would like to know it is working again.

Ok I'll check it out when I get home -- could have used it on this trip.
He has no email or any other contact info. Could have sworn back in Jan or Feb there was an email on one of the web sites listing all his apps.

It's not like you are buying photoshop for $1000 or whatever that thing costs so you can touch up a photo, most of those app developers are just regular guys like us that do this on the side. I figure kicking down a few bucks isn't really going to change my life but it's a way to say "thank you" to the developer. These guys are getting beer money for their work, not Angry Birds millions.
I give at least that in a night to a random bartender who does little more than pour a beer and hand it over. Someone out there spent a lot of time developing an app that makes my life a littler easier and if kicking down a few bucks makes him feel like someone appreciated his work, it's worth it. There a lot of times where nobody is paying for it, lots of people are using it and there is always that one guy out there that sends constant hate mail about a feature he thinks should be included. A little positive reinforcement goes a long way.
If you can afford to pay $300++ for a smartphone, even spending a princely $5 a month is over time enough to buy pretty much every program that you regularly use that has a paid version. I'm all about try-before-buy but if you have something you love and use the heck out of it, let the developer know.
If you are in a place in life where you can't scrape together a few bucks (but have a fancy phone??), drop them a note and tell them you appreciate their work, that goes a long way too.
And stop asking your mom permission to spend your money! Move out of the house! And make your bed!
