It isn't their fight to pick.

Their network, their sim management, their rules. Apple has nothing to say here. Happy that T-Mobile and Sprint participated, but if anyone expected AT&T to play nice, they clearly don't get what kind of company they are.

So why did AT&T agree to participate at all? It's not like Apple forced any company to participate, showed by the lack of any number of companies

Apple can pick their fights even against ATT in such circumstances, if Apple would have wanted such a fight and found it worth it to have such a fight. It's not like Apple can't restrict its official sales distribution channels to those providers which it fancies -- it can, if it wishes.

Indeed, but Apple isn't going to cut off it's nose to spite it's face. Whether people on this forum like AT&T or not, they still bring a tremendous number of customers to the table.

Regards

Yes.

Given Apple has to keep boosting its device sales numbers and margins to try to please the stock market players, waging a fight with ATT over this at this point would end up being characterized as you said: "to cut off its nose to spite its face".

Because why not? They had/have nothing to lose, as it clear in this case; they agreed to the switchable sim system, but were given (or demanded) the option to lock it down. Others may not have participated purely for technical reasons as their backend systems may not (yet) be ready for this.

Because it sounds like they're not participating. Apple should have made participation mean actual participation. They don't have to fight AT&T - just say, "you're not included" just like VZW isn't. Once they sign on more networks, let AT&T look like the fool that stays on the outside

"you're not included" means Apple would need a whole new SKU for the AT&T version of all the different new iPads. I'm sure you can understand the reason behind not wanting that?

Carriers subsidizing iPhones probably wouldn't be too happy about it making it easier for subscribers to switch to a competitor easily.

Probably not, but for those of us who buy our phones outside of contract, at full price, why can't we have the option to switch service as we want?

Considering that ATT is locking the apple sim once activated on their network this sim at this point in time, while interesting tech, is actually useless.

Until Apple figures out a way to block that capability. Innovation is not always easy or fluid, but it is important. Apple is good at that.

And it is not useless for those who avoid ATT and for those who travel and will enjoy being able to activate a data account when they arrive in a new country. It is a small start, but that is how an avalanche starts as well, small.

Not good prices, $50 for 1 GB in France?

Germany and Italy are $50 for 3 GB.

Just returned from Italy, paid 30 for 10 GB with Telecom Italia.
