Thanks. That leads me to one more question. How old is the old Simple Choice? I signed up for T-Mobile almost two years ago. My basic monthly fee is $70.

Just compare what you have with what is currently on offer (number of lines, amount of Internet). If it is the same, your upgrade is free. If not, you have to pay extra to add Mex/Can, or can change to a current plan.

Yeah, I didn't read the fine print. I signed up for the "Family Stateside International Talk with mobile" service for $10 back when that was an option. In order to move to the Simple Choice North America plan I would have to spend an extra $20++ per month to get the same level of service for my and my spouse's two lines. It's not a good deal in my case with what little travel we do to Canada. My trips to Mexico have thus far been limited to day trips on foot across the border.

They've been referring to it on my bill as Simple Choice for about two years now. They went to their current model of phasing out contracts beginning in March 2013.

You don't have to change your plan. You can just add Mex/Can for $10 per account. You may not wish to, but it's not $20.

"Postpaid customers on promotional or legacy plans can keep their promotional plan and add these benefits for just $10 a month, which covers everyone on their account up to 10 people! "

I see the option now:

I was looking here:

The reason I was saying it was a net +$20 was because if I lost the $10/month Family international calling with mobile and wanted to add it back I would have to spend $15/line.

It's nice to know that this is an option at $10/month, but it's still not worthwhile in my case with my travel and calling patterns.

That is exactly why in the other thread that I referenced, you see my long-winded explanation of my personal situation. Everyone's usage patterns are different and as transparent at TMO tries to be, you still need to read the fine print and drill down. You got the $10 promo, hopefully per account and not per line, which was a GREAT deal....don't give it up! Some may find this new Mexico/Canada cost effective, I suspect most won't.

As far as the Simple Choice plan is concerned, if you were already on an existing plan, it is grandfathered unless you decide to fiddle with it. We have a family plan that is over 10 years old and we just piggyback on the new promos and offerings without losing the basic cost package. YMMV. :)

Yes, this is what we have. I agree that everybody has different calling needs. If I didn't have the $10/account add-on I would switch since there would be zero additional cost to do so. However, in our case, adding on the $10/month service doesn't benefit us much with our travel plans. It is confusing even though T-Mobile usually tries to do the right thing.

Unfortunately, you get misinformed CSRs or in-store employees who will tell you anything simply to make the sale, and you get home finding out you got something different than what you were told. For instance, about two years ago I got placed on an Equipment Installment Plan for a whopping total of $0.24 (at 1˘/month) even though I didn't request any EIP and wanted to do a one time payment for my new phone. My suspicion is that they get a commission on EIPs, which is why they added it. It's left such a negative impression that every time I go to a T-Mobile store I have to assume a defensive and hypervigilant posture due to being misled in the past.

If I don't adopt the North America add-on service/plan, I still retain the throttled data, unlimited texts, and $0.20/minute calling, right?

I might have to call once or twice to get a knowledgeable CSR ;)

Yes, i believe that is the case. Don't sign up for the new promo and leave things as they are.....

The only other promo I have is calling from stateside to 20+ mobile/land and 35+ landlines abroad without international roaming. The initial promo was $10 per account per month but has been bumped to $15 per line per month....you may or may not have this already?

Yes, I have the $10/account promo. It's great because my wife calls back home to Asia frequently, and it's perfect for staying in touch when friends, family, and colleagues are traveling overseas. ^

My Wife is in Jarkarta for work and her brand spanking new iPHONE decided that it would not register on any network there.

She called T-Mobile form her hotel room (which is very pricey) and explained to T-Mobile that she was calling from her hotel room and that her phone refused to register on any network in Indonesia.

My Wife said the T-Mobile rep offered to call her back in her hotel room so that T-Mobile would incur any charges and not my Wife which blew her away and she provided him the hotel phone number and about 5 minutes later he called her back and started working with her to get her phone up and going.

She said about 20 minutes later her iPHONE registered and started receiving her emails, texts, etc. She was so happy with her Service that she emailed me a nice note saying that hubby was right (those are always nice as they are so rare).

Anyway she said after four speed tests in Jakarta she was seeing slightly faster than T-Mobile promises approximately 200kbps down rather than the 128kbps and it serves her purposes of using Facebook/Instagram/GMail, etc.

Her work phone is on Verizon and that is paid for by her employer and it is much much faster DATA wise but I am sure the roaming is expensive.

Such good customer service was impressive and rare. It was stories like this that prompted me to drop ATT and signed up for TMO (in addition to the free text/data internationally).

While waiting for the SIM card delivery (3 days overdue), TMO already took over my phone number (transferring the same mobile #). Since 3 days ago, I cannot receive calls nor make calls with the existing ATT SIM.

I called TMO custom service. Agent said my order still sat in the warehouse. I have to call again tomorrow to see if it can be “expedited”. This is not a good way to start a new relationship!

I hope things will get better from here on.

Would it be easier, had you visited a T Mobile shop to pick up a SIM card?

If your phone does register, you can call T-mobile from it for free.

From Taipei, Taiwan, our niece's 3 T-Mo Simple Choice Family Plan's smartphone won't register locally here yesterday when we landed - I manually switched mine to TW Mobile. They called T-Mo this morning free at 1-505-998-3793 at no charge & got it "unblocked" and both voice/WiFi & free data roaming are working this Tuesday morning at breakfast. Heading to Taoyuan/chun shortly & should be just fine - pulling up Google Map & I just made WiFi & Hangouts call back to the States, before checking out the 7-Eleven & Family Marts across the street for some weather gears ... highly humidity.

Thanks for the tip, didn't know that, I figured you could call T-Mobile, didn't know that it would be free.

A few years ago, I had to dial back to the State to fix an issue with a Credit Card, it said that there is a collect number to call outside the USA, but I could never figure out how to call collect from outside the USA (let alone in the USA anymore) and just called back to the Credit Card company from my cell phone.

The Credit Card company said that I could send in a copy of my cell bill and they would credit my account for the cost of the call which I thought was pretty fare.

I know for T-Mobile data and calls are included in many countries, but I'm not sure which ones. In Europe where T-Mobile has a presence I assume it is included, but what about countries in Africa, Asia and South America? I'd really like to hear some first hand experience about the availability and costs of services in those regions before I switch over.
