How could buying a local SIM be "easier" than doing nothing other than turning on your phone and have it work in a new country before your airplane even gets to the gate? |
Question when calling using Viber app
Question when calling using viber app- Does it count on the data or you billed as call?

Quick question regarding settings in android phone (using Nexus 4) Do I have to check button "enable data roaming"? Do I have to select network? Thanks for help.
|
On iOS you have to enable data roaming.
On iOS, you can select Automatic carrier selection or select them manually. |

Data roaming should be enabled. As to your second question, my friends Note 3 automatically selects a network when we are travelling while I have to manually select a network on my Moto G. |

I agree on all counts. Except for my no data experience in Qatar, it's worked more or less problem free everywhere else I've been. I've found it plenty fast enough for all of the typical things I do, other than downloading or streaming media files. That is: web browsing, app usage, email, Skype (voice), and Google maps.
The one thing I do run into problems with is downloading new apps. That takes way too long in most cases. Fortunately, it's rare that I need to do so while traveling internationally, but occasionally I stumble into a situation where a new app comes to my attention that's useful in the moment. Other than that, the free 128kbps data is just fine. Plenty of speed to use Google Maps, email and most apps. |

If you take the trouble to read the preceding sentence in his/her statement all will be clear.
Tmobile international coverage is spotty and very slow (not even at the rate they advertise). |

I did take the trouble. It said:
He makes a blanket statement which simply isn't true. While there are a few countries that are problematic, the reports on this thread from many are consistent with my personal experience: it works as advertised in most cases. |
I'm preparing for my RTW trip and I'm looking for a global data solution. Has anyone tried the bxdigital $15 for 6 months sim? It's a T-Mobile simple choice sim thus it has free unlimited international data roaming. It's only 2G while roaming but for my purposes, that's fine. $15 for 6 months is more than I need but cheaper than any other option I've found. There have been reported problems. Bad sims being sent out and plans being canceled. Yet there are some good reports. Has anyone used one internationally? I'm especially concerned about speculation that it's a tablet only sim. I want to use it with my smartphone. I don't want it to work for 2 weeks and then die while I'm on the road.
Here's a howardforums thread about it. http://www.howardforums.com/showthre...g-a-guinea-pig |
I have Tmobile and it is sketchy.
In Peru, it offered 4g services(no LTE)and used it alot. infact I uploaded over 100pics to FB on the International Data. No additional charge But In the Phillipines, it didnt work. Free SMS texting worked, but NOT Roaming Data In Thailand, it didnt work, Free text, but no data In Singapore, it did work 4g, no LTE In Japan, it didnt work In the Dominican Republic, it didnt work, only text I think on certain networks, you need to add or change the APN. But unfortunately, I do not know how. |
I just picked up a Tmobile sim and used it in Germany, Italy, Spain, France and Switzerland. It "worked" seamlessly enough, but was very slow at all times. Slower than 3G, for sure. It seemed like I always had only one or two bars, even in large cities. I let it choose networks automatically.

There should not be a need to change APN. You are not changing sim cards. So, your device already has the tmobile APN. It's possible that they may not have data roaming agreement in those countries.
