I'm an expat living in Jakarta. Just discovered this plan on my last trip home to US. I had always kept a tmoblie sim with a US # to use on my trips back, but just did pay as you go. This has been a GAME CHANGER for me. Has worked well in home country, Malaysia, Singapore, HK, and Thailand. No more messing with local sims! Thank you, tmobile:)

This free data worked great on my recent trip to Thailand, Japan and Bali. The speed in Bali and japan seemed a bit faster than Thailand, but it was always plenty fast for checking email,Facebook or even using google maps navigation. This is a no brainer for anyone that travels overseas frequently.

I don't remember. But, as I travel these countries often, I will start to notice and post here.

First time using TM abroad - VERY favorable experience. If it works 1/2 as good elsewhere I'll be ecstatic.
Landed at CDG, powered up the phone, BAM - instant service. Good service too! From what I could tell - 3G (I'm aware sometimes it shows 3G, but it's actually running at 2G). Only weird thing was...it was running on Orange, and then another network I've never heard of (Started with an S, and it was three characters - don't remember). Service was great, then started to get spotty. Because I knew about this thread/FT, I knew TM worked with Bouygues, not Orange (why'd it pick up with Orange in the first place then?). So, I turned off "Automatically Connect" and then started to use Bouygues. Fantastic on Bouygues. Both in Paris and Bordeaux. Always showing 3G. Now, whether it's actually running at 3G, can't tell. The bad part is I'm now on a river cruise - I could literally jump onto shore (the boat is still tied to the dock) - and zip service. I'm sure I'm not the only w/ this issue, and I'm sure it's not a TM issue either. So far so good!! Here's to hoping it works as well in Chiang Mai and Egypt. |

In regards to no service on your river cruise, have you tried manually connecting to SFR or Orange, or are you just sticking with Bouygues? I had very good connections with DTAC and AIS while in BKK, so hopefully you should be good to go with at least one of those in CM. The only oddity I found was that after a few days I would lose connection with the network I was using and would have to switch to the other carrier. It was no problem and most likely it was my error. |
Since switching to T-Mobile's Simple Choice we've used it quite successfully and economically in Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Switzerland, Austria, Hong Kong, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, and Vietnam. The coverage is often better than it is in the U.S. ;) We've added the high-speed packages twice but don't feel we really need them for our usage pattern.
We've had a few hiccups along the way, especially going between Wifi and cell towers, but rebooting seems to help. We also used it recently for a couple of Wifi calls at a resort in the Maldives after I had turned off data, and I was shocked to find a bill for over $300. It's my fault for not reading the website carefully enough (and the TM phone rep had to research it herself), but they reversed the charges and are charging me 20 cents a minute for the calls. ^^ The rep confirmed I could get around this by using Skype on Wifi in non-Simple Choice countries. I do that whenever convenient to save most of that 20 cents per minute. For us as leisure travelers T-Mobile's Simple Choice has been tremendous and we've found the phone support to be excellent. |

Careful - there is a certain minimum amount of time you need to be active on Tmobile's US network or they cancel your line.

How long is that? I'm thinking about getting a sim for a trip in about a month. I don't want them to cancel mid trip.

Hi, there is a Simple Starter 500 MB Plan also available for $40 per month. But does it have international usage??? Does anyone know?

I thought it was 50% in a 3 month span. Am I wrong on that?

Have you tried turning the phone off/on, going in and out of airplane mode or manually selecting another provider?
I am back in service without any problem. |
