Google Hangouts allows calling to U.S. numbers for free over Wi-Fi (or cellular data network). Good option for iOS users.

T-Mobile Comes Through! (a bit of Vz bashing...)

The president of our company was traveling to Costa Rica for the holidays, but needed to keep in touch. Our corporate plan is with Verizon, so I went ahead and swapped out his hotspot for an international version and added the data plan (100MB/$25), so that he could keep in touch on his computer. I gave him the 4th line of my "4/$100 plan", which he placed in his old iPhone 5, so that he had 20-cent/minute calls (vs. $2.89/minute on V...). With him in Costa Rica not less than a day, his hotspot stopped working - he texted and I was on the phone with Verizon. Come to find out, they have no roaming partner in Costa Rica, so data is $20/MB - meaning when he hit 50 MB, it triggered the $1000 lockout on the line... I was pissed (as was he). At least his T-Mobile phone was working for data...

Quickly went online to my TMo account and added a 200MB higher-speed plan to my line (for the same $25). I sent him the instructions for turning on "Hotspot Mode" on the iPhone 5, and got the "Worked. Gracias." text message. Whew!

So is the president going to switch your corporate plan to avoid verizon gouging ? I'd be upset as a stockholder (if this was a public company) if something that could cost $25 cost $1000! Same issue if it's not public, though.

He may switch to AT&T, but not T-Mobile. The main concern is coverage in our office locations around the US - Vz offers the best coverage for him, especially around the DC area. T-Mo meets my requirements for a personal phone (but I also carry a Vz work phone).

I now get to spend chunk of next week fighting it out with Vz...

A T-Mobile tablet package isn't that expensive. It could be worth a small corporate contract and keeping a few sims at work. Lend them out when necessary and assign permanent ones to certain individuals who have the need. It is too bad that a dual sim Verizon android doesn't exist (that I know of). The Sony Z3 dual sim could be a good dual sim device for those using AT&T and T-Mobile.

While the texting and phone service was excellent (connected to Movistar) I noticed that even though the phone would indicate 3G speed, there was no data connectivity. I have read that this could be due to the fact that the iPhone 6 does not have support for the signal band that Movistar uses. Has anyone else encountered this, and if so, was there an option on the phone that needed to be changed in order to get it to work?

Did you turn off LTE via Settings->Cellular? Global Roaming is mostly 3G. AT&T does have some international LTE roaming agreements and T-Mobile seems to get a bit in Germany, but in general, LTE roaming isn't enabled. It could be that the phone kept on trying to authorize on the LTE network, even if the speed shown was 3G. Many carriers still operate them as slightly different networks and it could be that the roaming agreement wasn't applied to the LTE profiles.

Thanks for the advice--I'll have to try that the next time I go abroad. I was originally afraid that if I switched off LTE roaming, all data roaming would be switched off.

Don't remember if I posted anything about my recent trip to Egypt, so here goes nothing...

Spent 8 days in Egypt (all over: Cairo, Aswan, Abu Simbel, Luxor, Edna, Esna, Aswan, and more...even on the Nile), 2 in Abu Dhabi.

Phone service across Egypt was a 10/10

Texting was a 10/10

iMessage was an 7-8/10

Data was a 4/10 (thereby making iMessage anything less than a 10/10)

Facebook and Instagram were a 4/10

Data just hardly worked. Said 3G the WHOLE time, must have been less than 2G. Was so slow didn't even bother using it.

That aside, for Egypt, I'd still rank the service very highly.....I mean, having a phone on the Nile, on an old ship? Awesome! iMessage working EVERYWHERE? Awesome!

Pity re: email & web, but...better than nothing.

Re: Abu Dhabi, everything worked at a 10/10 level. Props.

One of my co-workers in Egypt with a local SIM three weeks ago reported spotty internet in general, not sure if this was local ISP issues or backhaul data issues. His comment was before the political changes this was NEVER an issue on local SIM WCDMA. Don't know if part of the issues are just plain lack of bandwidth locally affecting backhaul to TMO.

What speed does a tablet roam at? 64k or 128k?

It works on Android now, too. Odd that they brought VoIP calling to iOS first, but it's no longer iOS exclusive.

Just completed a trip that took me through/to:
Malaysia
Thailand
Qatar
Sweden
Germany and
Austria

This plan has been a lifesaver. Worked flawlessly in each country. In Germany, frequently had LTE. Very VERY happy T-Mobile.

Feeling Totally Border Free

My iPhone is grandfathered on ATT global roaming. I just traded in my Verizon tablet plan for Harbor Mobile's version of TMobile's tablet plan for 5 gigs for $18 a month counting taxes. My ATT plan includes Canada. My little Nokia has a Toggle Mobile SIM with free inbound calls (and free outbound thanks to Google) together with great VOIP over 3g and more often LTE. If you think about the percentage of the globe that is in my "coverage area" it is mind boggling.

"Can you hear me now Verizon guy?"

Is that global roaming at full LTE speeds or at 128 kbps?

Interesting.

FWIW, agree with those who say TM has been a lifesaver. LOVE this plan. Don't regret switching over from my unlimited data grandfathered ATT :)
