Also, as star_world noted, sometimes cable modems mate with a device that gets plugged into them. If it has bonded to your computer, it may reject your router. You may need to plug your router into your cable modem and then power cycle your cable modem, and then power cycle your router.
to add to this, occasionally, you even need to contact the ISP and have them reset something on their side to allow a new device to obtain an IP address.

I ended up ordering a new router, but still tried a few of the more recent suggestions. Releasing and renewing the IP address did not work. I did power cycle both the modem and router, still did not work. I called Comcast the other night to help troubleshoot and they were unable to help and also suggested I might need a new router. I'm officially out of ideas and am looking forward to my router arriving later today - nice when the distribution center happens to be 50 miles from your house!

I'll be surprised when just putting in a new router works. COULD be the old one died, but normally what dies is the radio, or the ability to connect to ethernet (which you would see at the modem if the ethernet light was not on) or something like that. Going back to fresh settings with a full reset - and then just getting an IP from the router should be enough.

keep us posted.

Finally got around to installing the router. It works! I'm back in the land of the connected! Thanks for everyone's help!

For the record, the ethernet light was on at the modem, router, and laptop, so don't think that was it. Anyway, all good now...
