I'll be surprised when just putting in a new router works. COULD be the old one died, but normally what dies is the radio, or the ability to connect to ethernet (which you would see at the modem if the ethernet light was not on) or something like that. Going back to fresh settings with a full reset - and then just getting an IP from the router should be enough.
