Yes, had it happen last month. Lots of signs stating specifically that tablets and e-readers must be out of carry ons and out of cases. At least one sign specificed iPads and Kindles were included.

I just finished an 11-segment trip that included passing through security at LHR (three times), BRU, GIB, LIS, MAD, and BCN (as well as ORD, DFW, and MIA). At the U.S. airports, nobody cared about my iPad; I left it in my carry-on. At all of the European airports, I had to remove it from my hand luggage. Mine is a first-generation iPad, so the new smart covers don't fit. I have the soft black faux suede/rubber bookwrap type cover sold by Apple back in the day, but now no longer available. In addition, I now keep it in one of the new First amenity kit neoprene cases from AA F. Every time I went through a European airport, I was asked to remove the iPad from the neoprene AA sleeve, but I was never asked to remove the soft bookwrap cover.

Flew on United from LAX to OGG and I asked the TSA agent if I needed to pull it out and he said no,just laptops.

I'm sure it depends on airports discretion.

Here in the US, TSA employees will remove it from your luggage for you. And save you the trouble of having to ever buy a case for it again.

You can ignore this advice if you wish to travel outside the USA! All of Europe will require it out of the bag.

The above applies in the USA only. In Europe, all tablets, including iPads, must be removed. Not sure about Canada.

For a while Heathrow didn't require you to remove your laptop either. And then they somehow reverted to their old policy for some reason...

Positive. I saw that myself last November.

Laptops, tablets, Ipads have to come out of carry-on at airports outside the USA. In most cases they won't allow the laptops to be left in a sleeve either (there are specific notices about this at LHR for example).
95% of the time you do not have to take shoes off, taking shoes off without being asked to do so labels you as an American

I've *never* been required to do this at LHR... out of the bag has been fine.

I'm still unsure if we're talking about the same thing. My ipad is in a case like this:

Removing it and reinserting it is like this:
I use this case because of hand disabilities. What you're, and other posters, are saying, is that I have to pry the whole thing apart just to go through security, and then put it all back together again on the other side (something I cannot do without assistance.) Is this what you mean by "must be out of cases"? It means I have to find another case which works for my disability, and is easy to remove and reinsert the ipad. I wonder if such a case exists?

At CPH they did not have a problem with that case. Why is LHR different?

For the same reason that the rules in the U.S. are different than the rules at LHR, because they are different countries and different airport authorities.

But I think you're confusing apples (no pun intended ) and oranges here. You need to remove your iPad from your hand luggage at most European airports; despite what some have reported in this thread, you don't necessarily have to remove the iPad from its own individual case. As I mentioned upthread, I keep my iPad in a slim folder type case. I've never -- at any airport -- been asked to remove it from that case. However, I also then put the iPad and case inside a larger neoprene sleeve. I have been asked to remove it from the neoprene sleeve. It seems like as long as the screen is visible (as in your example), there isn't an issue. YMMV, of course.

If what you say is true, then it is the same as CPH. Someone said it had to come out of cases too. That's what is confusing me.

I'm not sure which part of what I posted you are confused about. It's all "true." One person posted that she had to take her e-reader out of its case. Other people quickly chimed in that they did not have the same experience in multiple trips through LHR. I don't think any of us are lying about our experiences, just reporting them as factually as we can. Take our posts for what they're worth and then plan accordingly for your trip. That's the best anyone can offer.
