Boingo mobile?

Has anyone used this on a tablet - like the xoom? I'm thinking about dropping azzurri ipass. It is excellent but just too expensive per month. I was thinking bingo mobile and add i2roam for backup.
How does bingo verify your on a mobile device?

Hi Jason8612,

I work for Boingo Wireless and am happy to help you determine whether Boingo is right for you. It sounds like you are on the right track with Boingo Mobile ($7.95/month) for unlimited worldwide access on up to two mobile devices. Here's a link to more info: http://www.boingo.com/wifi-plans/mobile/boingo-mobile.

If you need Wi-Fi access in specific geographic regions only (as opposed to worldwide) and/or you wish to add access for laptops, then take a look at our various location-specific plans: http://www.boingo.com/wifi-plans. The regional plans allow access on up to two devices, laptop or mobile, with the option to add additional devices for $5 per month.

As ~tc~ suggested, it's best if you use our service in conjunction with the free Boingo Wi-Finder app (required for Boingo Mobile accounts): www.boingo.com/boingo-apps/boingo-wifinder/pc. The app pops a notification when you are in a free or Boingo hotspot (helpful since it's not always clear at the venue).

Happy to answer questions or help you further. Reply here or email me at [email protected].

Cheers and safe travels!

I'm a fan as well. It's definitely saved my bacon a few times.

What's with all the complaints?

I'm doing a week in the UK shortly, including some time in LHR, and the Boingo Mobile plan (I'd use on an iPad) seems pretty reasonable. I understand it's a monthly plan, and I'd cancel on my return, "without penalty" and their site says. But on other sites (not flytertalk) I see an awful lot of complaints about people getting charged monthly forever. I suspect those are people who used the "day plan", which may be a bit deceptive as you apparently sign up for a monthly service and get hit with an access charge for each AP you hit.

But I'm wondering if we FT'ers like it because we do understand the terms? Will I regret signing up for the monthly plan (using the iPad app for access) and then trying to cancel? (won't have lounge access on this trip, unfortunately, also some non-airport access would be sweet). Thanks!

I paid for Boingo for about a year. For me, it's less about the plan and more about the hotspots. In the U.S. they seem to have reduced their footprint. Internationally, if you know where you need wireless, figure out who that location partners with, if anyone. Then get a plan with that provider before your trip begins. When I've used Boingo internationally, I haven't found the list of hotspot locations to be all that convenient. That is, I don't want to walk / take a cab to a hotspot that's a mile away from me just for free WiFi.

Alternately, on the iPad you could choose Boingo Credits...

http://www.boingo.com/wifi-plans/mob...-wifi-credits/

...this is a prepaid plan where you pay $1.99 per hour or $19.99 for eleven hours. The hours do not expire which means you can carry them forward to use on other trips, and there is no automatic renewal or cancellation issue. In my experience Boingo Credits work well if there is a Boingo SSID, but not as reliably when using partner sites. However, if the app does not recognize the partner SSID a call to Boingo Customer service will typically fix it (eg they will authorize you to purchase a pass with a credit card and issue a credit to offset the expense.)

This said, free wifi is very easy to find in London, in you drink coffee

See here, for example:

Boingo Credits look good but my understanding is that once you connect to any AP, you've used your credit, and that gives you an hour at that AP - spend 15 minutes there and then go some place else and you'll eat another credit.

Correct. I use it as a supplement to free services and to tethering to my UK mobile phone. It works for my pattern, but may not be suitable for you.
