I did not refer to the current generation. The ones are expected to be released in April.

People are forever guessing what the new ipads will have.

They guess everything Verizon / GSM / 4G / Camera and this way, they can always be partially right. The Verizon model was not LTE, it did not have dual cameras, it did not do GSM, etc.

Until Apple actually makes the announcement with specs it's just a bunch of carefully controlled rumors I believe Apple has an entire PR team managing to keep interest high.

No way an iPad with DVD player is every going to happen.

Handbrake is probably the best way to convert videos. If you do have trouble, it's probably the disc or you might need to update VLC. (Had to do that a couple years ago when i couldn't get past the encryption on a DVD. the updated VLC player came with whatever handbrake needed to get the job done.

If they were to put a DVD drive into an iPad, it would have to be thicker, heavier and the the battery life when using the drive would drop to about 5 hours.

Also, if you play an HD rip on an iPad, you can actually see a difference in sharpness, despite the iPad not having an HD (720p or better) screen.

There should be a way to automate ripping. Like stick a DVD in, have it rip automatically and then sync the rip to iTunes so that the next time you sync, the file is copied over.

Otherwise, what does iTunes charge for movie rentals?

That, and besides the occasional OS install, I haven't used the DVD player on my laptop/computer for something like 7 years now.

Interesting.

I've got a BD burner and specifically bought a BD stand-alone player that could play BD data discs.

I use this quite a bit.
