No way an iPad with DVD player is every going to happen.

Handbrake is probably the best way to convert videos. If you do have trouble, it's probably the disc or you might need to update VLC. (Had to do that a couple years ago when i couldn't get past the encryption on a DVD. the updated VLC player came with whatever handbrake needed to get the job done.
