Unlike nanos, touches, shuffles and their ilk, the 'classics' have hard drives in them...

I don't understand the appeal of the other iPod products. I love my Classic because (1) it holds my entire music collection, and (2) its batteries last long enough so I can listen to it continuously on a 16-hour transpac flight. I have no interest in a product that holds a limited amount of music and whose batteries won't support my flying habits.

Understood, but Apple seems to have abandoned the Classic -- there have been no significant changes in 5 years.

I remember the good old days when iPod was Apple's halo product and the speculation threads on FT would run into the hundreds of posts before each new release.
My first iPod was an original Mini, then the original Nano and finally the original Touch.
While there have been quite a few enhancements in this announcement there just isn't a wow-factor or killer feature to compel me to upgrade.

After all these years, there still isn't a company in the world that has made anything that can compete with the iPod touch. I *still* think the Zune HD is better for music, but as an allround device, the Touch is king.

I didn't realize video would compress down that far. Well, that's good. Now, if only there was a larger screen to view video on.

I applaud Steve Jobs for the refresh of the iPod line.
I think it was wrong to do away with the iPod shuffle buttons and correct for Jobs to put it back on the shuffle. My SO used the previous gen where it was voice activated and she said it was a pain at times to control.
I am surprised that Jobs has not reinsated the 16 GB iPod Touch. However, that's not going to deter me from buying one in the near future, as my 6th gen iPod classic's battery is starting to fade.
I think that his transition for the iPod nano to go smaller and to get rid of the click wheel shows that he is transitioning from the signature click wheel to the signature Apple touch screen (I'm pretty sure Jobs will discontinue to the iPod classic soon). I can praise him for avoiding recycling old products and calling them new. Call me biased but IMO the iPad is a recycled gigantic iPod touch with a lot of disadvantages.
I have no comment on the iPod TV.

I was very disappointed by the iPod Touch camera. I was hoping it would have a decent camera, for uploads to facebook, etc. That way it could be a camera replacement.

I don't understand the appeal of the other iPod products.
when apple came out with the 4 gig ipod mini, it outsold the regular ipod which was only $50 more and 5 times the capacity. when apple replaced the ipod mini with the flash based ipod nano that had even less capacity (1 & 2 gig initially), it sold even better than the mini did.
the nano, which now tops out at 16 gig, was the best selling ipod until recently. now it's the ipod touch, largely because it can do a lot of other things too (games, email, web surfing, social networking, reference apps, etc.).
there are definitely users who want large capacity players, but they're in the minority so the focus is elsewhere in the product line.

on the other hand, the capacity of either one is quite a bit less than with an ipod classic. however, itunes 9.1 and later supports transcoding to 128 kb aac on the fly when syncing, which can save a lot of space if your music library is encoded at a higher bit rate. i don't notice a difference in sound quality, certainly not on an airplane. the first time you sync after activating this option will take a long time (especially if you have 100+ gig of music) but after that it only needs to transcode the songs that changed. if your library changes very little or not at all, it's basically a one time hit to make the change.

Also my take on the Apple TV is that they are too late to the game. My TV and my Blu-Ray can all play Netflix or Amazon natively (and this doesn't seem to be a trend that is lightening up). Why would I spend more money on another device just so I can have access to the iTunes library and store? They would have to do something very revolutionary to the iTunes business model (think subscription pricing) before I would get an Apple TV. Amazon now has the 99 cent TV episodes and those are not even rental, you can watch as many times as you please.

When the new gen came out without the buttons I hurridley bought a few of the previous gen. The lack of the clip was a killer for me. I still have one 2GB shuffle left so I doubt I'll be grabbing up this new shuffle any time soon. But I'm glad they reverted back to the great design.

It shoots pictures at the exact same resolution as it shoots video. I don't see why this has been such a big issue for so many people. Go buy a real camera already that has a sensor that can actually take in enough light to be practical for all but close up or really bright pictures.

It isn't "a big issue", it is just something that annoys me and I wish Apple had put a better sensor in the new iPod Touch.

I don't understand why they don't have a Nano with 32 GB of memory. It's 2010, people!
I'm quite content with my Nexus One and its expandable storage, thank you very much. The convenience of having only one device to carry with me wins out, no matter how pretty Apple's hardware.
