Amazon Appstore is running pretty good right now--until Apple gets an injunction for using "appstore." Apple's already filed suit.

It is offering a free app everyday. So far they've offered Angry Birds Rio, Doodle Jump and today, Shazam Encore, which is the $4.99 ad-free, unlimited tagging version. Angry Birds Rio is still free ("for a limited time") but the others run out after 24 hours.

You must first install the Android Appstore app from Amazon.com on your computer, and install that app from the text sent to you.

I've seen a few people recommend Tasker.

It will not come up on a Market search (in Thailand).

I saw it today on the online (with my laptop) Market, but with a price of $195.21. Are people really spending 200 bucks for this application. My Android phone didn't even cost that much.

Sean, I am not sure that you have the capability or not, but if you have access to a VPN (there a few services out there [some even for free] ) that would provide you a US external I.P. address so that you could purchase almost all Android applications.

When I was in Thailand I used my persona VPN so that I could stream Pandora and download updates to Android applications that are only available in the USA.

The more annoying part, was the lack of 3G in Thailand, I understand that True is starting to offer 3G (in Bangkok) but I was totally unable to buy a True SIM. I felt like a major idiot walking around Siam Paragon trying to purchase 3G service, and being told they only sell iPHONE. However, I did enjoy eating my way through the food hall in the basement.

Another method is to install the Amazon.com app from Android Market. From the Amazon.com app you can download the Amazon AppStore app without using a PC. You do need to tap Home > Menu > Settings > Applications > Unknown sources to install the Amazon AppStore and (I assume) any apps downloaded through it.

Unless you have at&t Mobility and purchased a branded Android handset from them. at&t Mobility removes the unknown sources permission check box from their Android handsets.

In other words, at&t Mobility does not allow apps that are not downloaded directly from the Android Market.

Ah, my phone was purchased from T-Mobile. Will the Amazon AppStore work at all with an AT&T phone?

If you click on any of the apps in the Amazon App Store, you'll find information on AT&T:

AT&T Compatibility
If you have an AT&T phone or tablet, you currently can't install the Amazon Appstore or purchase apps from it. AT&T is working to allow customers to install the Amazon Appstore and purchase apps from it. To sign up to be notified by AT&T when you are able to install the Amazon Appstore on AT&T phones and tablets, visit the AT&T website.

Paid applications, among others, are blocked in Thailand. I think you need to set up a Google Checkout account, perhaps when in an allowed country, then try a program like Market Access or Market Enabler.

In some cases I Paypal the developer directly, and sideload the apk. For free apps I can't "see" in the market I just download the .apk on my PC and then sideload it.

True offer 3G on the 850 Mhz frequency with 500+ bases stations in metro-Bangkok, Hua Hin, Pattaya, Phuket and maybe Chiang Mail. You can get a pre-paid SIM, but not at a True shop! Any mobile shop, counter, 7/11, etc sell them. I recommend the Hi=Speed NetSIM, 59 baht then add money and choose a plan. Easy peasy. I use True 3G, coverage and speed are excellent. TOT also have 500 3G base stations in metro-Bangkok operating on 2100 Mhz. They have some pre-paid SIMs as do their re-sellers/MVNOs: i-Kool, iMobile, IEC, 365, Mojo. Sometimes I fall back to 2G, or have to use 2G in the U.S., painful.

dan1431 Mar 28, 2011 7:16 am

Yeah, I did not realize that I could goto a 7/11 type place to purchase a TRUE sim....grr....used DTAC while in Bangkok (on 2G) and it was good enough.

QR Code Scaner

what ever you get, make sure you also include a QR code scanner, i find this very valuable as more and more places use it for promos and it can save you money

"Flight Control" is free today (4/2/11) on the Amazon Appstore for Android. It regularly sells for $2.99.

http://www.amazon.com/mobile-apps/b/...ode=2350149011

Air Traffic Control

Have you ever dreamed what it would have been like to control landing multiple retro aircraft, directing them and their occupants to a safe landing? What would it have been like, being an Air Traffic Controller in the '40s and '50s?

With one of the most stressful jobs in the world, an Air Traffic Controller is still responsible for the lives and safety of thousands today, but on your smartphone the dangers are only simulated, leaving nothing but... fun!

The game only takes a minute to learn; afterward, you won't be able to put it down. Guide aircraft to their landing zones but don't let them collide! Sounds easy? Well, only with smart strategy and keen eyes can you alter flight paths and keep the chaos under control. But you're a natural, a born air controller. Prepare yourself for addictive action!

Gameplay

Guide helicopters, small private aircraft, and larger retro airliners from the skies over populated areas onto airport tarmac landing strips. Help military aircraft make it on board an aircraft carrier. Keeping the skies safe in Flight Control doesn't require you to know about heading angles, flight rules or meteorological reports: you need a cool head and steady hand to control the gridlock of the air. You will never get bored of your surroundings nor your job.

Master the art of Flight Control

Flight Control Features
With a retro setting of post WWII, Flight Control offers five unique airfields and 10 different aircraft, including planes, helicopters, and military jets.

Enjoy the surroundings of a relaxing beachside resort while you guide jets, helicopters, and seaplanes safely to their landing zones.

Control the airspace around an aircraft carrier, commanding speedy military jets and helicopters.

Venture into the Australian Outback, featuring an emergency air ambulance plane that can't be controlled.

Grab the reins in a snowy winter wonderland where drifting snow and a windsock show the prevailing wind direction.

Welcome aboard, please sit back, fasten your seatbelt, and enjoy controlling the mayhem: get Flight Control for your smartphone.

Just downloaded Google Translate a couple weeks back. Love it!

It is amazingly accurate even with longer sentences as long as you are speaking in a semi quiet environment. I have found it very useful for helping me to learn Spanish. Much more useful than Rosetta Stone probably due to the fact that it is able to teach me exactly the things I want to say in an everyday conversation.

Wirelessly posted (Blackberry8700c: Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; U; Android 2.3.3; en-us; Nexus S Build/GRI40) AppleWebKit/533.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile Safari/533.1)

Im really liking Llama now. It lets actions be performed based on location from cell tower and works flawlessly. I have it set to automatically set to loud and turn wifi on at home then toggle off when I leave the house.
