Sipdroid is 100% over wifi or 3G DATA only. Trust me. I use this daily in the UK w/o using any minutes whatsoever.

You are right Bobby...it still dials another number before dialing your termination number so it uses minutes or if you are not in the US then it won't connect you to the Google Voice network unless your roaming is on (which is a bad thing)

For SipDroid alternative or if you just want another very good SIP softphone on your Droid then try CSIPSimple as I like it better than SipDroid. Been using it for a month or so with my Onesuite VoIP service and it works like a charm.

Agreed - I've been dabbling with CSipSimple the past month and am liking it slightly better. Have to do more testing re: reliability but seems to be at parity or better than Sipdroid already.

You should be able to find both apps in the marketplace by searching for "W.A.T.T." (Wandering Aramean Travel Tools).

I'm new to the Android party but this app is pretty cool. Thanks!

What do you like better about Csipsimple over Sipdroid?

thanks. will check into it.

Any app for making the contact picture full screen when the contact calls?
Currently it shows a little thumbnail but not full screen.

BestProfiles addresses this for other OS, but they dont make one for droid.

currently using CricketNews for cricket updates. Looking for one that has live scores to use during the upcoming worldcup.

CSipSimple seems to be a little more streamlined and requires less tweaking. I dislike with SipDroid that the codec doesn't seem to optimize very well automatically - on low bandwidth connections it doesn't seem to be that smart about dropping to a lower bandwidth codec.

Can anyone recommend a PC program that can manage my phone's contacts and calendar entries (like Palm Desktop)?

I've heard HTC Sync would do that, but I heard it won't work unless you have Sense installed on your phone.

I've also seen CompanionLink, but I don't think that software is worth $40.

I use MyPhoneExplorer, PC software and android sw, to synch/manage Contacts, Calls, SMSes, Calendar, alarms, w/Outlook2007 (no tasks/notes linkage that I've discovered yet). It does have about 100 more features. Pretty impressive.

MyPhoneExplorer PC SW

MyPhoneExplorer Android Client, available in the Market.

Other Apps I've been using:

Advanced Task Killer
Antivirus Free
Astro
Bank of America
Barcode Scanner
Busybox Installer
Dolphin Browser
Droid Stats
eBay
Go SMS
Google Listen
Google Voice
MSN Droid X
Music Mate
Fruit Ninja
OnTheFly
QR Droid
Quick Mark
RockPlayer
ROM Manager
Quick Settings
Titanium Backup
T-Mobile Account
Wireless Tether
WootWatcher

edited to add: Google Translate with integrated SMS translation is very impressive. I receive account status/management messages in a foreign language (Thai) so this is an incredible feature for me.

Exactly my thoughts.

Anyways, I already uninstall Google Voice on my Android because even if I am not online, it still ask if I want to dial the phone number with Google Voice. Is there a way that the app won't keep asking me to use Google Voice? If I want to use Google Voice then I'll just run the app.

Or if Google Voice can behave like SIP softphones, that it will only ask you if you want to dial with SIP if you are online otherwise you'll be using your phone minutes as default.

GV has a widget that quickly allows you to toggle between use for all calls, ask every time, do not use, use for international calls only.

This thread has been great. As a fairly recent Android user [Dell Streak - Froyo StreakDroid 1.6.0] it has given me many apps to search for and try.

Tasker is, far and away, the best android app. No contest.

I have to say, that this looks great for power-users.

I use Google Listen for podcasts. You can download them on 3G/Wifi before the flight and have hours of good content.

A new wonderful addition to my TATL commute, listening to hours of NPR/KCRW (e.g. Which Way LA)

Yup...The engine that Worldspan and Apollo were working on is now dead. I've got a new source that I got functional on the website; I need to port it over to the Android app now. Hopefully by the weekend but I'm also traveling and then in Africa for a few days so it may be a bit until it is fixed. The Galileo engine should still be working but I understand that it isn't the ideal solution in many cases.

I am uncertain if this is directly on-point, but I have been using "OnTheFly" from ITA to check possible routings.

Some apps that I see as critical
  • Barcode Scanner - for reading those QR codes on everything from movie posters to bus stoüp schedules.
  • Amazon Kindle
  • AppBrain
  • Auto Wifi Enabler - Turns on my WiFi when I return to my apartment, or go to the airport lounge. (Yes, I know that Tasker can do this...)
  • WiFi Advanced Configuration Editor - I use a WPA personal WiFi at one location and 2.2 disabled the required settings entry.
  • Where's My Droid - To find it when my kids were playing some games.

GamesGodroid
  • RoboDefense
  • Angry Birds
  • Air Control
When will Cut the Rope be ported to Android?

gfunkdave Feb 1, 2011 10:26 am

I too use Barcode Scanner, though Google Goggles will do the same thing and more.

OurGroceries is a great cross-platform app. I may actually cave-in and buy the $5 ad-free key.

great thread

Based on this thread I have added a number of Apps to my Droid, not a loser in the bunch SMB12, I like you app quite a bit.
Here is one I like Cam Card take a picture of a business card and update your phone directory. Work's well very accurate (not 100%), so you still need to check. It works well enough for me the only cards it has had trouble with have been cards from China with a large amount of information. It still got all the important bits correct. The free version limits the number of times per day or week (so it claims) but I have not had that occur yet. I have a friend with the paid version and did not see a difference

Hey thanks! I put back GV and add the widget, now I can quickly turn it off or turn it on.

PDANet and Phone Call at Same Time

How do I keep the tether going when I get a phone call? I have the Motorola Droid and it drops the internet tether when I answer the phone.
