Away vs Beis vs Monos Carry On

I was just reading several articles on the popular luggage brands for 2024 and Away, Beis, and Monos caught my attention. Up until now, I've had Tumi and Travelpro luggage - both of which I still like, but I'm intrigued by these relatively new brands. If you've tried them, any input on the best one? On a quick side note, I'm struck by how low Tumi is appearing on these lists. I've heard their quality has gone downhill.

I recently treated myself to the Monos Hybrid Carry on Plus in champagne largely because for a 10 day trip to Italy in July, that includes transiting at LHR and some internal train travel, I want to restrict myself to manageable carry-on luggage.

Its a rather lovely looking case (so far unused) but in all honesty it might turn out to be an unwise choice for the above and other forthcoming trips. It certainly looks like it will give me enough space for the trip but the exterior dimensions of the case are 23"x15"x9.5" and BA who we are flying with allow 22"x18"x10".

We'll be checking in online and heading straight to security/gate but the risk is that if the flight is busy and I'm made to gate check it. It seems nearly everytime I fly to LHR with BA they ask for volunteers to gate check their carry on! Once I was told they needed to gate check my bag until I told them I had to remove camera equipment and batteries inside! My ticket includes a checked bag so I assume a gate check it they say it is oversized won't cost me anything extra.

Also next again planned trip am flying AF/KL and it is too big to use for my carry-on with them. Although the Monos website says its compatible with all 3 of these airlines carry on size limits I am preparing myself for the fact that my shiny 350 case gets dented on its trip (though I accept that would happen over time anyway!) Will get a protective cover to put on it just in case though am slightly balking at the 52 Monos want for their version so may look at Amazon for something.

ALSO - What happened to the days before these annoying luggage sizers when your cabin luggage was allowed to add up to a total of 115cm (or whatever it was!)?

I personally only take backpacks to Italy/Europe. I have another trip coming up next April that involves traveling on a cruise ship for a transatlantic for 2+ weeks, a train, budget airline and another transatlantic cruise back. Taking regular wheel luggage can be problematic dragging around and up/down certain hotel and guest house stairs, depending on where you're going. Venice for instance works better with a backpack. I don't want to check anything so a medium size backpack works for me that doesn't weigh much.

Yes am not so much a back pack fan and tend to only have to carry my trolley case around the airport on most trips

Usually take a small one as my personal item and to use during a trip though.

I understand, because I'm the same way the majority of the time. But certain trips I bring only backpacks or shoulder bags/duffles. Enjoy your trip 👍

Used a Monos Carry On Pro (spec’d at 22x14x9) for a recent U.S.-UK jaunt, and neither AA nor BA had any size concerns. Observation, the Pro’s pocket comes at the cost of interior space to a somewhat greater extent than I expected. However, an external pocket is sooooo much more convenient. It was a 777 with AA, a BA CityFlyer E190 and a BA B737. Fit was fine.

Yes, BA allows larger size hand baggage (I've never seen them even check hand bag size, see threads in BA forum) but the problem in UK/Europe is with the LCC as they have strict policies and enforce them. Something to be aware of.

External pockets should be mandatory.

I use the Away travel carry-on and love it, I travel 2-3 times a month and it hasn't let me down.

I have made the switch Away bigger carry on.

Perfect fit in overhead for BA, Aegean and Delta ( more listed on website but these are the ones I have personally tried). Have still to try on Virgin but will test that later this year.

Monos Aluminum Luggage

I would very strongly advise against buying a Monos aluminum luggage. The structure of the luggage is sound, but the outer shell is extremely thin, aluminum, and is less, not more, durable than cheaper plastic luggage. These dents are far more than scuffs, and render monos luggage, downright fragile. Further, their customer service does not seem to acknowledge the problem, and responds to communications about it with the same sales talk over and over. This luggage is expensive, and absolutely not worth it. I would go for one of the other brands.

How is quince and their "lifetime" warranty compared to the above 3 brands?
