LOL and when I just searched (or should say attempted to search) for all posts started by a particular poster, I was told the search engine didn't understand my request.

BTW - I found the google search link off the pull down menu from the search option. THAT I liked having available as an option until some relief inside the site can be found.

SkiAdcock Jun 11, 2008 10:58 am

I tried doing a search for a thread I started a few weeks ago in the UA forum & used the exact thread title. Of course it didn't show up. Then I tried doing a search using my handle & the first threads that showed up were from 2007. I ended up doing display threads for the last month & then went through a gazillion pages looking for a check mark on the left side that indicated I had posted in a thread, until I finally came across the one I was looking for. Not really an optimum way to search.

cityfishing Jun 11, 2008 8:46 pm

When I click on a username to search for posts by that user, I get no results. This was working correctly earlier today.

I'm coming up with blanks on my searches. What the heck is going on?

Ditto at this hour, too.

Same here.

Internet Brands at work it seems -- I onder what functionality they are trying to add this time.

Search is down or at least failing to display results.

Still true as of time/date stamp of this post! :td:

This is going to severely cramp your posting style. :p

I am experiencing the same problem.

goalie Jun 12, 2008 9:02 am

search is totally impotent and shooting blanks this morning. tested it by simple searching the ua forum for posts by me and zip, nada & rien.

BearX220 Jun 12, 2008 9:03 am

Search has now deteriorated from erratic and unreliable to totally dead, am I right?

Mikel at Webflyer Jun 12, 2008 9:46 am

As many of you have already noticed, search is obviously not functional at the moment. The issue causing the failure is being addressed as I write this. I'll provide more updates as they become available.

Mikel at Webflyer Jun 12, 2008 10:23 am

Search is functional again.

Honestly, that could be debated. :)

What Happens to the Search Update Announcement?

This morning, I noticed the announcement, posted in mid-May, is gone, even though it hasn't been updated.

Giving all the "new" developments of search problems and site performance in the last couple of weeks, are there new plans and schedules as to how the search "improvements" are going to play out?

Any update will be appreciated.

The vanishing of the announcement was the result of an auto end date setting that needed to be changed ... it's up again now.

No new news yet, but the plan is still to update the announcement when the next round of modifications are implemented.

Kiwi Flyer Jun 17, 2008 1:00 pm

Sometime in the past 24 hours search has again lost the ability to show date and time by my own settings. This was fixed earlier and now seems to be unfixed :(

cblaisd Jun 18, 2008 1:03 pm

Search is now hanging and never completes.

EDIT: And of course this post never showed as actually completing, but the screen simply hung forever.

Kiwi Flyer Aug 7, 2008 12:40 pm

Is there any update on when the rest of the search problems will be addressed? The forum announcement is almost 3 months old.

I have several FAQ threads that are getting more and more out of date because it is difficult to find the relevant threads to link to.

On 20Jun08, I sent a PM to Mikel and Kevin, amongst other things, noting:

Issue: "Search this Thread" basic search should default to show as posts, not thread
Resolution: This was a total oversight and will be changed.

Appears to be fixed, as the above thread search was done with "search this thread." -Ed
This hasn't even been updated in the announcement.

We seem to be back to the times when nobody is taking the time to keep us updated.

Kiwi Flyer Aug 8, 2008 4:11 pm

As a reminder, search is still not returning all results and not necessarily sorting properly the results it does return.

In other words - the darn thing still doesn't work!

Why am I not surprised by your right-on-target assessment? ;)

IB, some search updates, please? Or should I use search (key words: search updates), would it help? :p

ps. If I am tech-savvy enough, I may just write a syntax (or whatever you call it) and have the search update announcement update itself.

SanDiego1K Aug 8, 2008 11:35 pm

When I search by title only, search continues to look at titles of posts within the thread and not at the title of the thread. Thus, threads I have retitled to properly reflect their content will not show up in a search by title.

Deleted Posts Are Still Showing Up in Search Results!

This is an ongoing problem that I don't think has been addressed (by FT/IB) yet: Deleted Posts Are Still Showing Up in Search Results!

Personally, I don't care who can see my deleted posts, but I don't think it's a good thing for us (general membership), that don't need to see them, to have access to these.

This was brought up ages ago, is there some reason that they can't be removed from search results?

SylviaCaras Aug 15, 2008 10:47 am

new posts?

I no longer have a 'new posts' option when I log in to My Flyer Talk. There's no search at all on my entry page. I don't see mention here that this is being changed.

In the meantime, a suggestion on how to best read new postings? I used to 'expand' each forum I was interested in. Clicking through to many and then scanning is cumbersome.

Sylvia, un-updated

Do you use the My Flyertalk feature? You can subscribe to the forums you're interested in and get a shortened list of just those. It also shows the threads you've posted to or subscribed to if any activity occurred since last login.

SylviaCaras Aug 16, 2008 11:12 am

Thanks, GoingAway. That is what I've been doing. What also interests me, what I am missing, is the general community, what's being talked about. So I like to read 5 - 10 pages of "New Posts".

Is that feature gone for good?

Sylvia

Kiwi Flyer Aug 16, 2008 5:51 pm

The new posts link still appears on the bar at the top of page for me.

You could also use this < new posts > link as a workaround.

SylviaCaras Aug 16, 2008 5:57 pm

Thanks Kiwi Flyer - that link works.

I'm using Firefox 2.0.0.16 and the 'new posts' option has been missing from the bar for maybe a week.

I've noticed intermittent problems on this site, using Firefox 3 also. Noted in Another FF3 / FT problem and Missing line in Tech Index on FF3 (okay in IE)., both of which still happen sometimes, but not consistently.

SylviaCaras Aug 17, 2008 12:28 pm

Not just Firefox

I'm having the same problem with Opera and IE - no search or new posts at MyFlyerTalk. Search available per forum. I'm using the link Kiwi Flyer provided for New Posts.

I seem to have it on some computers, not others. Glad to read this is a common problem, but still wondering why?

lin821 Aug 26, 2008 8:54 pm

Is the index up-to-date?

Don't know how to verify it myself. I apparently missed the "wild party" this afternoon :p. Haven't been on FT until now.

As so many problems (slowness, PMs...etc ) going on earlier today, is the search/index problem fixed yet?

In the last six months, the index is always acting out during the last (or 1st) weekend of every month. Since September is approaching, it would be much better if IB can get the handle of the now patterned problem now. @:-)

DallasBill Sep 5, 2008 3:15 pm

Is this a new search bug?

I know that a new release of FT is up, and am wondering if this is a new bug due to it, or an existing 'search' bug.

When I search (both in the travel tech. forum and site-wide) on the word 'zboost' all I get returned is a results page with a link to this thread: http://flyertalk.com/forum/showthrea...ghlight=zboost

But, on Nov 28 2007 I started a thread with 'zboost' in the title only:
http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=762032

It does not get returned. Shouldn't it be valid search result too??

It should. We will research this, thanks for pointing it out.

It's an existing problem. Unfortunately, threads that use a word in the title but not in the body of the thread are not returned in a search, unless you confine your search to the title. Then you will find your thread. It's the only thread returned.

Agreed, and the search engine definitely prioritises searching the message body rather the title even if the word does appear in both. The results produced clearly reflect this.

Yes, it's been an ongoing problem that the search would ignore the key words in the titles, which is the mods and most FTers depend on to locate the threads.

SanDiego1K has first reported this problem months ago (back in March, to be exact). I am so surprised to see this problem is just catching your attention.

Is it fair to assume the "bugs" we've been reporting in this thread haven't been looked into or worked on, even though you guys already (or claimed to) put together a compiled list of the search problems?

DallasBill Sep 5, 2008 3:45 pm

Thanks all. Seems to me that the basic search default should be a search term being found in thread or title.
