I am on the mobile version so I can't search, but what I normally try to find is the OMNI exercise blog. I tried last night with quotes and without quotes - no dice.

I found it easily in my search.

Is there anything I might possibly be doing different from you in terms of using the Search function?...

Ah, that helps. This problem in the omni case is outside search; it appears there are some permissions or caveats to searching forums that require a login. That's why myself (temp. admin access) and a moderator were able to find the OMNI threads, whilst you are not having luck. I'll forward this on this on - there is a permission issue somewhere at play here.

So what's up w/ the new search function. I just tried searching for a thread in the Marriott forum that I started within the last month, but didn't want to have to go through multiple pages to find it. Not only did it not bring it up, it brought up a gazillion other threads I had posted on. That's not really that helpful.

Cheers.

jmd001 Feb 26, 2009 10:19 am

And on the other hand, I did a Search of a 20+ page thread in the UA Forum on RCC rate increase for the word "automatic" and only one post was returned ... and the word was not highlighted in red (as I recall search words were in the past).

"My Posts" Capped at 500?

Just a headsup to IB IT team. Three days later, this "glitch" hasn't gone away. Instead of showing all posts by say users, there are still only 500 posts in search feature (i.e. Quick Links > My Posts).

joelfreak Feb 28, 2009 5:57 am

Searching for " ISP " and just ISP without the quotes comes up with nothing...I am sure someone probably reported problems with 3 letter codes, but I am just adding on in case they didn't.

the_happiness_store Feb 28, 2009 6:54 am

Does IBB even have a QA team?

The issues that we have been encountering with search and logging (having to tick the remember box again this morning) are more than embarrassing. They have turned into a farce of web site. :td:

mbstone Mar 1, 2009 5:19 am

I can't search OMNI or OMNI-PR. Sorry if this post is repetitive of information contained in the previous umpty-ump pages of this thread, I just don't have time to slog through it all.

Some issues are worth mentioning and memory being refreshed, since FTers are not sure what bugs have been worked on or resolved most of the time when search feature is involved in the last 13 month. ;)

For the moment being, without login, you can't search OMNI & /PR using IB Search. I'd reported this on 2/24/09, right after the "relaunch" of the updated search spiced with new wave of problems.

If you like, you can see how the IB Terms responded and addressed these issues here & here.

ps. Google is your best friend if you want to search OMNI. Google delivers 100% of the time. :D

For the first time in a year, Search is working from the standard IE browser! Congratulations!

the_happiness_store Mar 2, 2009 5:13 pm

I am so damn sick of search.

I wanted to find a post of mine to reply to a question on the UA Forum. So I did a search and my most recent UA post is June 22, 2008. I have posted today and definitely within the past week.

This is just a fiasco. It is absolute incompetence. When many are worried about losing their jobs due to the economy we would be fired for a performance like this.

magiciansampras Mar 3, 2009 7:59 am

FT search is really, really, really worthless.

I did a search in Trip Reports for Buenos Aires Intercontinental and I got threads about flying to India and Hong Kong. The threads did not have *any* of the three search words in them.

Something is seriously wrong with the search. Using google is the only solution that I can find. They have indexed this site correctly; IB has not.

I agree 100%.

jonu Mar 3, 2009 2:11 pm

It appears to me that for at least today, when you type in multiple words, you get an "OR" search and not an "AND" search. Hence all the extraneous results.

AFAIK, the cap of 500 search results from any search has been there for years. (Of course, it's possible that, intermittently, during periods of experimentation by the programming team, the cap has been changed. ;))

It's (normally) possible to work around the 500 limit by refining the search. (For example, you can look for all posts by a particular user in a particular forum, and/or with other qualifiers.)

It's not a glitch, it's a limitation to the way this type of search returns results. Basically, if someone with 50,000 posts does a search for all their posts a massive record set will be sent and risk breaking the site. For this reason, there has to be a limit to the number of records that are asked for. At present, that is set to 500, the vbulletin default.

In the future, we'd like to explore expanding that number, however at this time we feel that we've got some more important issues on our table than trying to load test that setting.

Try searching for "ISP" instead of " ISP ". (no spaces)

Can no longer search and sort by post date

Maybe an "alpha" is needed before the "beta" next time..

Do the following search:

keyword: american
Find threads with: at least 0 replies (the default setting)
Find posts from: your last visit
sort results by: last posting date in descending order
Show results as: posts

I did that search and I saw a post on the first page from 2001, in the subsequent pages I saw posts from 2005, 2007, 2008...get the idea? clearly wrong.

I only last logged in last week. Please fix it. All I want to do is see what posts have been made with a given keyword since I last logged in. Why is that so hard?

What the system appears to be doing is that there may be a post in a thread that may be years old, but if the thread has been posted to within the given timeframe, it thinks it should return that post, which is not what I'm asking for. The last verison of search had no problem doing this.

N830MH Mar 3, 2009 8:59 pm

Hi all,

I have a problems FTs is down for more than 20 minutes. So is that something wrong with Internet servers from COS? So can you please have reboost the internet connection for me. It wasn't. For the last 13 months, "My Posts" had always presented me my full 2K+ posts. I am talking about this specific search.

Thanks for the explanation.

FWIW, before the recent update of IB Search, when I clicked on Quick Links > My Posts, the system always showed me my complete 2K+ post in the result pages (except when the indexes were not loaded correctly). I had assumed it was a normal/standard default to show complete posts under "My Posts", which was different from the behavior of this current IB Search.

You are correct, the way IB search handled those requests was different and down the road if it's possible to restore this functionallity we will.

This isn't "beta", however we openly admit that the product is not perfect.

There are some issues that we're still working on. One is sorting by relevancy and another is limiting results from your last post. As we get these items working, we will be issuing new releases.

Can you tell us what issues you're still working on? It might cut down on some of the frustration. Or at least save us some time.

In order to work around this, I'm now selecting "2 weeks ago" under "Find Posts From" in "Search Options". Today, no results are being returned for 2 weeks - 6 months. If I leave that blank, the first result for my search term is dated Oct 6, 07.

My search is much better. I get results as recent as Oct 17, 08. Thanks IBB for being so nice to me.

for entertainment value, go to the travel safety and security forum (or any other forum, but tss should be a no brainer).
search 'liquid' without the quotes.

zero results.

really? c'mon, guys, i'm fine with using google search as a backup, but was really hoping i could rely on flyertalk to index its own posts. sheesh.

Fair criticism - this one is odd. Looks like I can search on "liquid" in this forum and it works. Searching on other terms in the TSS forum work also. But you are absolutely correct, searching for the term "liquid" in the TSS forum is currently not bringing up any results.

It doesn't appear to be related to indexing, but I will pass this along to the tech team for further research.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention, and nice catch ^

Great work, Mikel at Webflyer! Its should getting better for the future. I don't seem anymore problems FTs is currently down again in the future. So you have need to get reboost the Internet connections. Its doesn't happening again for couple days later. Let me know if you having any experience problems from FTs is down or getting database errors.

thanks for the help and for being so responsive. ^

fwiw, the search for 'liquid' also doesn't work in the thai airways forum, which is where i tried it first. perhaps there's a ban on liquids for our security. ;)

KENNECTED Mar 31, 2009 6:17 am

Search is not properly working at 8:04 AM.

I've never been stumped by the search feature. I'm a search pro. H*ll I'm the search police trainer. :p :p Anyway, the search feature, any version, has never been a problem for me.

However, today, I attempted to run a title search, using the word "breakfast" in the starwood forum. I get the following message, "Sorry - no matches. Please try some different terms." This is complete untrue. Here are two examples of threads in the starwood forum with "breakfast" in the title
  1. Starwood: what hotels gives breakfast to elites?
  2. Free breakfast for SPG Gold Preferred Member

I've been a member of FT long enough to know there are other starwood threads with breakfast in the title.

Can someone check the system and let us know what's going on?

IIRC, the title search hasn't been working for a long time, using quoted search term or not.

If you run another title search for this thread using the word "problems", you'll get the same sorry-no-matches result. (Yes, I just tested it.) There is obvious a problem since this thread is titled, "Search problems." ;)

Mikel at Webflyer Mar 31, 2009 9:15 am

lin821 is correct, there is an ongoing issue with the search by title function. As it stands right now, you can search by title on all open forums, but when limiting to a single forum the search fails.

lin821 Mar 31, 2009 2:37 pm

Any remedy for that? I mean other than using Google?

Folks do need to perform title search within a say forum successfully to narrow down the result.

No remedy yet. Of course, we'll let you know when there is (though, if history teaches us anything, many of you will likely discover the fix yourselves before we are able to post an update ... FTers are the toughest group in the world to scoop :) ).

FTers shouldn't need to find a fix. The search should just work as it does on many other sites.

I fail to see how you can take a product that worked relatively well and enhance it to the point of destruction with no apparent contingency plan.

For the past week or so, a search for "ita" looking for posts in the last week is returning no results. But I know there are plenty of posts - I've seen them by browsing around.

Things were working okay for about a month, but now no go.
