As for the malware, trojans, etc., I agree that that's pretty unacceptable from a 'trusted' site. But if you are on the Internet you pretty much better be prepared for that kind of stuff these days. As well may have been the case here, you may be able to control who YOU choose to partner with but you cant always control who your PARTNER has chosen to partner with. So it's always advisable to have your prophylactic on whether you are in a monogamous relationship or not.
Trusted sites don't spew malware at your PC (or make you pay $12/year to avoid it). If I surf to CNN, Amazon, or the NY Times (even as a non-paying customer), I shouldn't have to worry *at all*. If visitors to Amazon got malware on their systems, Amazon would take a tremendous hit.

What a great way to drastically reduce the FT membership by infecting its users with malware.
I'm not sure what IB paid for FT, but if this keeps up their investment may be worth pennies on the dollar as the masses look for an alternative frequent flyer web site. (Yes there are several others)

But fer realsies, adapt or die, right? There ain't no going back, so everyone just needs to be patient as FT evolves.
Not even "pretty unacceptable", koko. Try "dead wrong". Depending on jurisdiction, maybe even "illegal".

They said they'd look into it and make sure it never happens again. They did that and say they are now keeping an eye on it. What more do folks want!? For IB to prostrate itself and beg forgiveness!?

But if Amazon did get hit with malware via an advertising network and immediately shut it off when they found out about it whom would you blame?

A) Respond far more quickly
B) Be more willing than we have seen here to admit fault
C) Research the malware that they had (inadvertently) inflicted upon their users
D) Research solutions for that particular infection
E) Provide information for their users on which tools to use to purge the infection.
Actually doing something about what has happened is what I would expect there, and here. Apologies have little value without substance.
Cheers.

No, 2 weeks ago they said they would look into it (porn) and they did. They also apologized
It happened again with malware last weekend. No apology for this has come.
This is after they said they were taking care of problem ads.

Didn't mean to sidetrack the thread - which is about Malware & the consequences to FTers computers
- by my asking about the single post thing.
Thanks for all the input everyone. And nope, hadn't checked out the thread about tips & tricks cuz I rarely visit Tech Issues. Looks pretty handy really, so thanks for the heads up! Too bad it's buried in a forum that I would guess 99% of FTers don't get to. Perhaps FT could move it to a dif forum or the everything you need to know about FT but were afraid to ask section of the site?
And back OT - wonder if IB isn't responding publicly re: the Malware cuz they could be held more accountable if someone's computer got fubar'd? That's a lot worse than exposing someone to porn. No idea, but just a thought. As others have said, while it might be possible to get Malware from other websites, etc, I think the others (such as the Amazon example) would step up to the plate faster.
Cheers.

We have identified the ad network from which they came, and we have been in direct communication with them to block the inappropriate ads.

The main reason the email worked out so poorly is that there was no obvious tie-in with FlyerTalk. Very few people on FlyerTalk know anything about Internet Brands.
The first person to call me regarding the email thought that the new owners of FlyerTalk had sold his email address to some third party. There was nothing within the actual message that appeared to have any relation whatsoever to FlyerTalk. Additionally, I am fairly certain that this person does not subscribe to TalkMail so if it was sent only to TalkMail recipients I am not sure why this person received it.
The fact that the unsubscribe address was broken only served to make matters worse. Had the message been a TalkMail special edition, or something like that, things may have gone quite differently.

Frankly, while I knew that Internet Brands had purchased FT, I did not at the time associate "ib" with Internet Brands. As xyzzy has said, having a name like "TalkMail Special Edition" or Travel Deals for the FT Community or something relating to FT would have been much better.
While I do not want to receive promotional material from any company (I try to opt out of whatever I can), I would have been less upset if it did not look like FT (read Internet Brands) had sold my email to some third party (read Travel Zoo/ibtraveldeals). Having FT in the name would have alleviated that concern.
Adding insult to injury, the broken opt out only served to make it look more SPAM like than it actually was.

October: Malware Attack Month
I believe this issue had been taken care of here at FT. What a relief!
It appears FT is not the only innocent victim under attack. I was not aware of this (sort of) malware epidemic until I read another announcement this evening from another board (ALLUC Announcement: 11/3/2007). I visit the site to fix my non-mile-nor-point-related addiction (TV Shows). Yes, I am a helpless junkie now y'all know it.
The ALLUC site mentioned yourmusic suffered the same banner ads hijack back in October:
http://www.dynamoo.com/diary/malware...com-hijack.htm
I am not sure if my "discovery" this evening would help our hamster team* prevent future attack. Nevertheless, I figure it's worth mentioning so our fellow FTers know we are not alone and IB probably was not at fault.
