What would be really beneficial, and I don't know how do it, is to have separate browser settings for every website.

Cloudship Jan 18, 2016 8:15 am

It's a Java issue. I beliueve it is Adsafeprotected that has the old (outdated) code. But could be others, too. You can fix it temporarily by setting Shockwave Java to Always activate, but I know a lot of people are not going to want to do this. I think there would be an even better solution and that is if a script in some kind of window like that stops working it automatically kills it and just puts a blank page.

Other than having to close the ads by clicking the X, what is the disruption?

They should appear once/day per browser if you are logged in.

Cloudship Jan 20, 2016 6:49 pm

I am finding it more like once every few hours more than day. But, it also means you have to stay logged in. I perhaps wouldn't mind a pop-up if it wasn't one of the total obscuring type. I realize that that is the direction a lot of websites are going, but to be honest it does really, really make it seem really like a marketing website. Just sayin.

Oh, and for those who are finding it loads real slow, you have to clean your cache frequently. Hopefully this is just a factor of that one ad, not the type of ad.

I am not a computer guy.

My understanding is that clicking in a popup window can cause things to happen, like malware to be downloaded. My understanding is that what appears on the screen is controlled by the programmer. If a programmer chose to display a popup window with the image of an X in the corner, he or she could do it. It does not need to be what it appears to be. I have seen windows where the entire window is a clickable control, and I don't doubt that that entire window could have the image of an X in a corner. The X in the corner could even be a separate control that closes the popup as it causes software to be downloaded.

Can you assure me that the scenario I've outlined cannot happen? Can you assure me that it cannot happen on FlyerTalk?

In the meantime, I get ride of the popup by reloading the window. On my abysmal internet connection, that takes time. (What are all those bytes that a window needs, anyway?)

Like Cloudship, I see them more than once a day some days. Other days, they do not appear at all.

Hard to pin down which ad is causing the problem. I sometimes have to wait a minute for a page to load while the icon spins (top left). I see a messaged bottom left that it is either waiting for an ad site or "processing request". This happens sometimes for a day or two then things are fine for a week. Then it starts again.

All you see are little messages on the bottom like this.

I am experiencing a similar issue but only when I access the OMNI section of the forums.

.

The ad appears more than once a day.

(And no, I am not using an ad-blocker.)

IBobi Jan 21, 2016 5:17 pm

We've changed the behavior of the ad. It should appear that way only if you're not logged in.

Recently I received a survey from IHG asking why I hadn't taken advantage of their bonus points program and one reason I listed was this popup ad.

I stay logged in and I have to X out multiple times a day. ....constantly. Hyatt seems to be the major offender. Annoying and obnoxious doesn't begin to describe it. The worst is when the ad moves when I am trying to X so I might accidentally hit the ad or the ones where the X is barely visible. I have just accepted that I can't read a good percentage of stuff because of banners covering posts.
I miss the good old days of FT reading without all the intrusion.

Edited to add--it used to just do this on my phone. Today I am having to X stuff on my PC. These ads and the ones blocking text are seriously interfering with any enjoyment that comes from FT.

The worst is when it pops up 1) over the log in box or 2) as you are trying to type a reply.

Something is blocking scrolling navigation on my IE11 / Windows 10 setup. No right hand scroll bar shows, and can't drag around page using touchscreen. Tabbing around elements works, but is a rubbish way to navigate.

Not all the time, but can't explore page to see what is common when it happens. Started a couple of days ago. Still happening.

EDIT: To get things usable again I put the following DNS entries (all the domains accessed captured from a trace when things get stuck) into the local hosts file. Not a solution that I like, but it at least allows me to post this :).

If I get time to figure out which is the specific cause I'll let you know, but spending an hour to get to this point is already frustrating enough !

Occasionally, the ads on the side of the screen obsure the meaningful text. This is on an iPad Air 2 (I believe) running iOS 9.2.1 (says the device), using the provided (and update) Safari, in the US.
