Don't make me feel guilty for the word association thread!!! It's not its fault it's so popular!

Fortunately, OMNI and UA's many problems long predated the WAT, so I'm hoping it's not to blame!

United's dead again for me now as well.

While fine early this morning, it is now seriously so slow as to be essentially unusable. UA and OMNI have been down for an hour or more for many folks.

Is the addition of the ver growing growing, oh so lengthy "word association thread" in OMNI possibly a cause, at least in part?

Thanks.

Perhaps it's the "ver growing growing" oh so lengthy other posts that are apperaring http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif

We're looking at further upgrades to the FT server in the near future that may help with some of these problems.

We have a small favor to ask you, gang. When posting an issue like this, please create a new thread rather than adding to an old thread -- as I'm sure you can see there are more than 100 posts in this thread -- a lot to wade through in the time we have.

HA! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

On that topic though, a serious question, that may help the slowness question. That topic has about 60 pages or whatever. And most of them are one word or one line answers. That had me wondering 'why so many pages'?

Has anyone esle noticed the number of posting lines on a given 'page' over on Omni, (and I have the same feeling on FT Travel as a whole) is SUBSTANTIALLY less than it is here?

Not sure if I am making my question clear, but it seems a "page" of a thread on FT 'Miles' takes up SEVERAL times as many posts and data as does one page on FT 'Travel'.

i.e. it is my guess if the "Word Assocation" was in Miles Buzz (heaven forbid!) it would run to about a third or quarter as many pages long, altough containing the same number of posts. It seems like a simple "tweaking" issue and may help stabilse that Forum, rather than 60 or so "pages" of data needing to be "rad" by computer each time a post is made. Omni has crashed often since being moved to FT Travel.

John At Webflyer - I responded here to keep answer within context of last few posts, but as it seems to be a possible issue with the general slowness, I'll take your advice and make it into a new thread.

Same problem today. Same suggestion.

Omni and UA also down for me. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif

cblaisd - not so sure if another website needs to be involved in announcing any outages, as from memory ALL of FT being down is a very rare bird isn't it? This forum does seem to suffice pretty well and is one click away for anyone interested.

And due to the 24 hour - 7 day nature of FT posters it might well be at 1 a.m. Sunday Colorado time that some European or Pacific members might notice some Forums are down and post it here for general information to others.

If FT staff needed to respond via an outage notice on another dedicated website page, it may be 30-50 hours before anyone is at their desk at 8.30am Monday to do this. And we are pre-assuming they KNOW there is a problem, and this board would surely be their guide to that in the first place. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Why does only united have the problem?

Maybe it's the 8+ pages on Punki's PDX problem :-)

Oh the woes of a different timezone - no tech support in sight :-(

While the last complete outage was in February, iirc, nonetheless I think an FT Status page would be helpful. E.g., my DSL internet provider has a status page that has a notation on various aspects of the service, whether they're normal or not, and if they're impaired in what way, and when the expected fix time is.

Something like that could be useful, I still think. E.g., an official FT status page (not just folks posting in this forum which may or may not represent the entirety of the problem and which gives no indication of resolution time) that could say something like:

"5/13/02 UA Forum and Omni are down. We are aware of the problem and hope for a fix by xxx p.m. MDT"

Good suggestion cblaisd.

BTW at almost exactly midnight tonight (or this morning, depending how you look at it), FlyerTalk really kicked into gear.

ozstamps May 14, 2002 2:01 am

cblaisd - I can't disagree it would be a useful feature, and my internet provider does just that - the same as yours. The difference is I pay my internet provider a goodly sum for cute bells and whistles like that, and I wonder just how much infrastructure Randy can build in for this free service? And as mentioned, an outage Saturday or Sunday or holidays is not going to get onto a seperate site anyway, more likely than not. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Anyway, free service or not, someone was burning the midnight oil and the United Forum did indeed surge to life about that time as premex confirms. Thanks for good the work whomever was responsible. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

FT running incredibly slow

Is something going on or is it me? I tried doing a traceroute to FT and all seems fine but the board is running SLLLOOOW! I even get timeouts in FT Travel... the funny thing is, Omni actually loads ok once I get onto travel!

dan at WebFlyer May 30, 2002 12:34 pm

I don't notice any slowdowns in Travel or Miles, for the forums I spot checked. Is it still acting slow for you?

kanebear May 30, 2002 1:38 pm

It's getting better... it's probably between here and there.
