why can't the first poster of a thread delete it
Did it not used to be that the originator of a thread could delete that thread by deleting their originating post?
It does not seem to be allowed now.

the problem/discussion some time ago on this board was, that by deleting the very first 'opening' poster, all subsequent posters were automatically deleted too - something a (majority?) part of FlyerTalk-contributors didn't want.

I hope you all understand that someone who responses to a post has a right to see their comments not edited or deleted. If the originator could delete the post, many great comments would be lost. As explained before, if the person starting the thread wanted to, they could simply edit out every word they started with, which is the only thing they should be able to do. As for editing the topic - that too may confuse people who are looking for a thread they have posted to or are keeping a tab on. I have yet to find a good argument for allowing a thread starter to delete everyone's post. Are there any?

How about if the originator started the thread to ask a question or state a comment to another poster, then after the purpose of the thread has been served, have it turn into another long drawnout pointless rambling name calling tirade which no longer serves any purpose?

It did seem to me to be a better place, Randy, when the initiator could delete the entire thread.
That way, when the entire thread went on an entirely different, and destructive tangent, it could be eliminated by the wisdom of consensus. Having been a first-hand party to some early-on deletions, I can assure you that they were frequently encouraged by many e-mails by many posters to the originator to simply stop this nonsense.
This was, IMHO, the finest form of self-policing. Moreover, it worked extremely well. What better argument could one present?

Punki - I don't believe that is true. Many of the early thread deletions were nothing more than an example of people throwing their weight around. In almost every case, some useful FF content was deleted in addition to the OMNI/flaming content. Unfortunately, "the wisdom of concensus" leaps out of the page at me and says "a few of us don't like you &/or what you are posting". A horse designed by committee would be a camel. I agree 100% with Randy about this.

Interesting and accurate assessment IMHO, James!
Perhaps a thread could be eliminated only if there is nothing yet anything posted following it, so as to correct errors such as the case of multiple accidental posts but I believe the UBB software may make this somewhat difficult if not impossible!
