It did seem to me to be a better place, Randy, when the initiator could delete the entire thread.

That way, when the entire thread went on an entirely different, and destructive tangent, it could be eliminated by the wisdom of consensus. Having been a first-hand party to some early-on deletions, I can assure you that they were frequently encouraged by many e-mails by many posters to the originator to simply stop this nonsense.

This was, IMHO, the finest form of self-policing. Moreover, it worked extremely well. What better argument could one present?
