Remove paid seats for online check-in

Hi,
I got an upcoming flight tomorrow and was trying to check in online. I was playing around with changing seats, but now it won't let me check in unless I pay for the seats that I selected. Is there a way to remove the seats I picked and get the free ones?
Thanks

I've run into this, and resolved the situation only by checking in at the airport. Though I suppose if you have a spare hour or so you could go through the call centre.

For some time the online check-in system delivered an "acknowledgement" rather than a boarding card. The boarding card had to be collected at the check-in desk after a covid-related document check. But things change quickly, I've no idea of current procedures.

Yes, if you have been assigned seats in advance you should not try to change the seats during OLCI - been there done that!

Indeed a relevant Q. TAP OLCI will produce BP now - or you still have to collect a BP at the check-in counters?

In CUN they didn't accept the boarding passes on phones at security, had to queue for almost an hour at the check-in desk
