I got a really great offer from AMEX for 5 points per $ spent at grocery stores, drug stores, restaurants and gas stations......

OH wait a minute....that what the HH AMEX offers everyday!! Seriously I didn't get anything as usual and that is why I got the HH AMEX recently. I am so sick of these targeted promos. WHINE!!

Way to treat the loyal following.

Just another day in [starwood] paradise.
Isn't this something American Express is doing, and not Starwood? I think you are overreacting, ILUVCITIBANK (or, at least, misdirecting your ire).

I wondered if someone would bring this up; I think the jury is out on this debate, personally.

Just like starwood adamently denied being the one who pulled the plug on the starwood PLAT / CENT co-promotion, and of course AMEX denies they did it....I still see anecdotal evidence that suggests starwood was more responsible than was amex.

Similarly, everytime promotion starpoints fail to post for new cardholders, we see poster after poster get run around in circles....amex blames starwood...and vice-versa.

I choose to believe starwood surely to goodness has *some impact* on a targeted campaign which dices and slices and carves up their most loyal customerbase, if not outright approval authority, on promotions like this.

To the extent that starwood and amex always want to play coy about who is responsible for ANYTHING related to co-promotions, they both deserve my/our ire, seems to me.

============================
My bottom-line conclusion is that NO AMEX PROMOTION like this could be 100% in the hands of AMEX without starwood's explicit approval. After all, when AMEX carves up starwood's customer base, which by definition alienates one group (the non-targeted) over another (the target), is it logical starwood has no supervisory oversight in choosing these targets ?

I'm not positive who all got these 25% incentives, but I am nearing my 1yr mark where people typically cancel cards and I got this incentive. I spend a reasonable amount of $ on the card each month, so maybe this is a subtle way they are trying to get me to keep the card, since you have to be an active cardholder to get the bonus miles to post (in 3 months or so after the end of the promo period). So there may be strategy in their selectivity after all --- or not.

I have three cards. One I use all the time, anywhere from $7,000 to
$17,000 per month.- Fairly new card, had only one year.
Second card - almost never use, also a new card- its the business one and
I got it for the 10,000 points
Third card I have had for years, it has usually less than $1,000 per month
I keep it listed a few places for my mother to use for RX etc.

It seems like if there were a strategy I would fit in someplace but I never
get any special offers on any of my cards!

Y'know, I guess Amex just doesn't feel they need to incentive my spending on this card (I've put > $50k on it since April 15).

In the past I've written Amex to express my dismay about being ignored for promos, year in and year out, and they've given me boatloads of points to compensate.

But I'm just not sure that I'll bother, frankly it's gotten old. (Of course, not sending my note is to my sole detriment.)

gleff, may I ask your understanding of whether a targeted AMEX promotion like this is 100% the design of AMEX, or maybe half/half AMEX and spg, or spg's design entirely ?
