FAQ :
http://members.marriott.com/faq/#will-rewards-and-spg-be-turning-into-one-program

Will Rewards and SPG be turning into one program?
These are two of the best programs in the industry, and we want you to benefit from everything that makes SPG and Rewards great. We don’t anticipate that the two programs will come together before 2018, and we will keep you informed of any updates. In the meantime, there’s no change to how you book reservations, manage your accounts or earn Elite night credits, points and miles in the current programs

Status Matches
MR Platinum <--> SPG Platinum
MR Gold <--> SPG Gold
MR Silver <--> SPG Preferred Plus
MR Member <--> SPG Preferred

If your status changes (i.e. Gold->Plat) in one program, your status in the other program will be automatically upgraded within 24 hours per Marriott FAQ

You can now link your Marriott Rewards or Ritz-Carlton Rewards account with your SPG account.
To link your accounts, log in to either account at:
http://www.spg.com/linkmarriott
http://members.marriott.com/

It will be a 3:1 transfer ratio between MR-SPG

If I have Lifetime Status in one of the programs, will I also get it in the other program when I link my accounts?
This is the Official Answer : "We appreciate your loyalty! Lifetime Status is specific to the program that you earned it in. While linking accounts will not result in Lifetime Status in the other program, your Elite status will be matched to the same Elite tier in the other program. Any existing Lifetime Status you already hold within either program will still be enjoyed within that program. We’re working on more ways to recognize your loyalty and Lifetime Status as we work towards harmonizing the programs, which we don’t anticipate happening until 2018."

Transferring points from SPG to MR does NOT change lifetime MR points.

Transferring points from SPG to MR does NOT count as activity & therefore does not extend the expiration date of points.

Sweet, I'm all linked. Immediate Platinum status granted with Marriott.

We finally know the conversion value. It's 3 to 1 (3 Marriott points = 1 Starpoint). Right in the middle of the guesses everyone had.

Yup, as the prior poster showed, the conversion rate is out 3 to 1 (or 1 to 3). Not too bad, could've been worse.

Starwood and Marriott Merger Update – Now You Can Link Your Accounts

Today marks an exciting day for our members, and we’re thrilled for you to be among the first to hear about it here! With the Starwood and Marriott merger now officially complete, our loyalty programs still remain separate. However, starting today you can unlock an exciting world of new destinations (Budapest, Bahamas and more) and redemption options by linking your SPG account with your Marriott Rewards or Ritz Carlton Rewards account. When you link accounts you will instantly enjoy two new advantages:
• Elite status match
• Points transfer between the programs

You can see full details and link your accounts (or enroll if you’re not already a member) here.

Other than these new account linking advantages, nothing changes today for SPG. Your benefits, elite status and existing reservations are all unaffected. And, you should continue to book, stay, earn and redeem just as you always do.

This is just the beginning, and we’re excited for you! As always, we’ll be here and can help answer any questions that you have regarding today’s news.

Here is the email I received after linking accounts:

"Success. Your accounts are Linked.

You've successfully linked your SPG® and Marriott Rewards® or The Ritz-Carlton Rewards® accounts.

Now you can take advantage of additional opportunities — including reciprocal elite status match and transfer of points between the programs.

Remember, we don't anticipate launching a newly combined program until 2018 at the earliest. This means SPG will continue to run separately until then. During this period, you can continue to earn and redeem as you normally do, and there is no change to how you manage your SPG account or book reservations."

This is also good news for those of us (including me) who are 9 years in towards LTP status. We should be able to achieve it prior to merger (which, if they do continue the lifetime Plat program) at least gives us a chance to be grandfathered into it.

There is no "grandfathering" from Starwood into Marriott. This is disappointing news for those with lifetime Starwood. Where there's a choice, I'll be choosing Hyatt going forward.

What do we make of this wording from the FAQ? (emphasis mine)

I have attained Lifetime status in one of the loyalty programs already. Will that be recognized in the Status Match to the other program?
Don’t worry; you’ll continue to enjoy all the benefits of Lifetime status in the program in which you earned it. We are initially matching your tier status between programs, and when the programs are combined in the future, we’ll consider ways that preserve the continued recognition of our most valued lifetime customers.

Marriott Lifetime Gold requires 1.6M lifetime points earned and 500 nights... Marriott Platinum requires 2M lifetime points earned and 750 nights.

As a lifteime SPG Plat as of one year ago, I have no idea how many lifetime SPG points I've earned, but I do know I'm at around 600 nights. This wording makes it sound like they have every intention of potentially not honoring a lifetime Plat to Plat match in a situation like mine, once the combined program is born.

<reliving the nightmare of lost Million Miler lifetime benefits when CO took over UA...>

Wonder what will happen to SPG cards? Will Chase buy the accounts? I'm to far over 5/24 to get one directly from Chase.

I have a Marriott Mastercard in the UK which earns 1 MR per £1... and the SPG AmEx which earns 1 SPG per £1... Not bad to have a non-Amex earning SPG points now too.

This is good news, thank you! Is there any extra benefit for Lifetime Platinum SPG, i.e. does the lifetime benefit translate to Marriott?
