I have a paid reservation in very early November. Fair enough it they will "honor" it. But should I assume that the suite night awards won't work? Should I assume that I'll get no platinum benefits? Should i assume that I'll earn no SPG points?

Yes, your assumption is correct.

You can book thru end of 2015 on Starwood site for revenue stay, including special rates, such as AAA.

Message appearing when trying to book award stay:

SPG redemption options may be available. For information, call 888-625-4990.
SPG Cash & Points, SPG Member-Only Hot Escapes are not available for your dates. See Lowest Standard Rates below, or browse Flexible Dates Calendar to find available dates for your rate preferences.

Yes, this would be normal expectations. You can book paid rates through Starwood, with some limited exceptions, right up to the minute the property is deactivated. But, while you will have a rate and reservation that the hotel will honor, it will not earn Starpoints, stay/night credit, and you will receive no in-hotel SPG elite member benefits if the stay falls in a time frame after the hotel leaves Starwood.

Considering it will be a Hilton in early November, it's probably a safe assumption that you won't get Starpoints for staying at a Hilton.

Now, you can always try to contact the hotel GM directly and explain that you'd like to stay there, but with the reflagging you are looking at other options. Maybe the hotel itself will work directly with you to 'incentivize' you to stay rather than go to a different SPG property. But when Nov 1 comes around, it's clearly out of SPG's hands.

All the restaurants at the Diplomat are also participating in the latest SPG F&B promo.

I don't see anything wrong with any of that, they're still Starwood until the day they are not.

William,
If a booking starts Oct 25th and ends Nov 2nd, do SPG benefits apply to all, or none or partially?

Partially. SPG would want members to receive the appropriate credit for their time at the resort when it was affiliated with Starwood; however, in order to do so, we would need members to contact Program Services with the request along with their folio from the stay once it is completed. They can be sent to [email protected] for this purpose.

More info:

The hotel, which was originally opened in 1959, will remain open and fully operational and will conduct business as usual during the transition, according to representatives with Thayer. In addition, all existing reservations will be honored.
Slight error in opening date of this property, which actually opened in 2002 (prior Diplomat structure, which opened in 1959, was demolished).

New owner beginning $100 million "enhancement" to property "later this year."

Update from Starwood...

Your existing reservations for arrival after 10.29.2014 will not be honored if it's
  • An award booking with points
  • Paid stay booked with SPG member rate

It makes no difference when the reservation was made.

Starwood will offer nearest available property as alternate, but nothing other than that. Current room rates apply for alternative properties.

Emails are beginning to be sent, notifying guests of the situation and listing contact information for assistance.

I can't possibly imagine how many guests are impacted by this, especially with the peak season approaching. I truly feel for those on the front lines, who will be fielding the phone calls from disgruntled guests.
