Please use this thread to post failures or difficulties in securing Platinum upgrades, based on the published benefits of the Platinum level, which are :

"Upgrades to best available room at check-in, including Standard Suites"

qualified by

"Subject to availability at check-in for the entire length of the stay, provided the room was not booked through a pre-paid third-party channel.
Specialty Suites such as, but not limited to, premium view, Presidential, Honeymoon, and multiple bedroom suites are excluded. This benefit does not apply to all-suite hotels. Best rooms are identified by each property and may not include upgraded Towers level accommodations unless Towers level accommodations were booked originally.
The upgrade benefit is available for one room for the personal use of the Member only, regardless of the number of additional rooms purchased by the Member. This benefit is not offered at Aloft and Element properties"

For a detailed discussion of the Platinum upgrade benefit, see the wiki at I'm Platinum. Why didn't I get a complimentary suite upgrade? [Master thread].

Starwood do not publish which of the various categories of Suites at each hotel are 'Standard', and which are not, so we don't know which Suites are in the 'Upgrade Pool', and which are excluded. So, if a Suite is available under the terms and qualifications of the benefit, but an upgrade is denied, and it is not absolutely clear that the Suite in question is not a "Standard Suite", then we should report that as a failure.

If you only manage to secure a rightful upgrade after challenging the front desk on check-in, or have instances where SNAs (Suite Night Upgrade) were not honoured, then you may report this too.

You may also report instances where suites are showing as available online, but not actually available at the hotel, due to (apparent) differences in real-time availability online.

Please post in standard format :

Property :
Dates(s) :
Room booked :
Room received : (if different than above):
Award stay :: (yes/no), type (C+P, FAN, FWN, FRN, SPG50, etc.)
BRG stay : (yes/no)
SNA(s) requested : (yes/no)
Comments :

...and include in the comments, particularly, the 'non-Standard' Suite category that you failed to secure an upgrade to.

W Doha Hotel & Residences

Hotel: W Doha Hotel & Residences
Dates: July 7th
Room Booked: Spectacular
Room Received: Spectacular
Award Stay: No
BRG Stay: Yes
SNA Requested: No
I used the room as a day room for a long layover in between two flights (which they knew about). How can suites not be available for day use only? Plenty of availability the day before and the day after of arrival.

I always ask this when people post about the availability of suites.

Of the suites available, how many were select standard suites? Without knowing that information, how is it considered a failure?

The W Doha has 36 Standard Suites, that if we're considering the no. of Cool Corner Suites and the no. of W suites, which are upgradeable using SNA's. So the numbers in my opinion makes it a failure.

And how many filled that day? There are a lot of variables!

Marvelous rooms (next higher room category of the non suite rooms) were available, W Suites, Cool Corner Suites (lowest suite category) and WOW Suites were also available. I think from what I recall only the Extreme WOW Suite was not available. I checked by trying to reserve 9 rooms on the reservation page.

Comments: I haven't been here in months. This used to be my go to hotel . I think it's about to change. Probably because I was spoiled by their previous GM. Nothing lucrative was ever given. Even though they only have one suite it was special occasions when it was offered to me. Just the feeling of belonging here was always there. This stay was not that excellent . Even though Club Rooms were available I was given a room in the 300 building. Which I refused right away as I know that was the smoking building. Was changed into the 200 building. I wasn't even given access to the Club Lounge to begin with. But then I was sent new keys to my room.

Comments: Really nice hotel (and area) - only 1 night stay so didn't argue. Person on reception didn't seem at all professional

If no suites were available, this upgrade cannot be considered a failure.

You're right. I did not adhere to the spirit of this thread. I just realized it's for suspected T&C violations. In that case my Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit stay doesn't belong here. ^

Comments: Hotel is full so no upgrade acceptable, but disappointed to be allocated low floor (5th) and room not available until 4pm on checkin. No Plat recognition on checkin.
