upgrading a starfriend rate?

Starfriend rate, when available, is usually offered across all room categories except suites. So why not book directly the category you want to upgrade to (unless of course it is a suite)?
And of course you need an authorization form for the friends rate to be confirmed by the hotel at check in

Platinum Members are not eligible for any in-hotel benefits when booking pre-paid or other third-party rates through third party channels, such as, but not limited to the channels listed in the definition of Eligible Rate.
The only category of excluded rates (elite benefit-wise) are third party bookings. What you go on referring to is related to stay credit and points earning. Do not mix these two, essentially unrelated things.
