Interlining *A to MH question

Hello FT,
Apologies for bringing such an old thread up; but I have a quick question regarding SQ and MH interlining.

I have a ticket from YVR-NRT-SIN on AC/SQ respectively and another from SIN-KUL-PER on MH.

If the agent is unable to check my bags all the way to Perth, could I ask them to check it through to NRT, pick up my bags and check in again at the SQ counters where hopefully the agent will be able to check in my bags from NRT-SIN-KUL-PER?

If it is of any help, I booked YVR-SIN on Orbitz and have 2 separate airline confirmation codes on AC and SQ + I booked SIN-KUL-PER on MH.com.

ps. The reason I ask this is because I have *G and would like to benefit from the luggage allowance; but if it means I have to collect my baggage in SIN and check in again to PER; I will only be able to bring 20kg on MH (no status! )

It depends on AC really if the agent is willing to check you in only to NRT. But you might be able to ask check in agent at YVR to check all the way to PER. My suggestion is not to as there is too many connections and you may end up with 2 luggage tags !

If the layover at NRT is short, you will have problems. If not, then that might be the best solution.

As you have 2 tickets, and even though you are connected through from YVR, MH *may* ask you to pay for the excess based on your ticket allowance being only 20kg. Just be prepared.

Thanks for your reply! I have a 5.5 hour layover NRT, so plenty of time. I called up SQ regarding interlining with MH - and the agent said they don't interline with MH ... odd

Dear Daniel,

SQ DOES interline with MH, i can confirm this based on my recent experience, please refer to the link above for the post i posted on this regard. The SQ reservation hotlines do everything by the book, but this varies with what actually will happen with airport control procedures, so take the advice from the SQ hotlines with a pinch of salt..

Since your transferring point in Malaysia is at KUL, the airport is capable of auto-transferring your baggage directly to PER. So does SIN.

However, Guy Betsy does have a really good point on that it's better to try not to have too many connections for your baggage. Since the later legs of your flights are on MH, i would suggest you check your baggage through only to NRT from your point of origin, and then recheck them with SQ in NRT and ask the agent to check it through with MH to PER. Show your MH printout to the agent and they will be able to do the trick for you, and since you are *G and will check in at premium counters, i guess the agent will be willing to go the extra length for you.

Hope it helps and do share back your actual experience later on.

Good luck,

I wouldn't be too surprise if SQ and MH do not interline with MH about to join oneworld and SQ in star it probably would be ending interlining soon since Star Alliance members cannot interline with non star alliance members.

Yes, but SQ and MH have a very unique and close relationship and always have. All flights between SIN-KUL are jointly marketed by both and that's not going to end. I've checked bags many times w SQ going on to MH and visa versa

Star Alliance members definitely can interline with non-star alliance members, for instance NZ to KL, AF, and QF -- as well as UA to 4Q, HA, EK or JL.

Hey guys, thank you for your responses!
Change of Plans,

The only reason I considered MH over QF was because the MH flight departs at 6.45am, but the QF flight departs at 11.30pm that night!! The cost of the two flights were the same. I ended up choosing QF based on my status and luggage allowances just to be safe, but the downside is a 20 hour layover in SIN.
