Is *G baggage allowance unconditional?

Here's my situation: I am AC *G and I'm trying to get OZ *G also this year, i.e. right now I am only *G on AC. Therefore on my next itinerary (carrier CO) I will collect miles on OZ without special status.

Will the additional free baggage allowance for *G members still apply?

Has anyone practical experience with such a case?

No. How do you expect it to apply when you are using your OZ program to collect miles?

IMO youd just need to show your *G card at check-in, no need to credit the flight to that FFP. The same rules apply with regards to lounge access.

Ive done this many times times on LH (using my M&M card to collect miles and my AC card for the status benefits), ni problem at all.

Some airlines actually have two fields in the PNR, one for the FFP you want to earn miles with and one for your status.

You'll have no problem as long as you can produce a valid, physical, card at the time of check-in.

Duh. You check in with your AC G card and get the extra allowance. At the gate you ask them change the points to your OZ account. Be sure to get a new BP reflecting the change. Hundreds of *A pax do this every day.

cheers,

Henry

No need for that for baggage allowance, IME. Just show them the AC *G card & it's good to go although it will require a human for check-in since the kiosk won't know about the *G status. However, the above can always be used as a back up plan if an overzealous agent tries to deny you the benefit.

You may encounter difficulties in practice as some airline check in staff would insist that in order to check in additional baggage you would have to use the card with *G logo on it. Last time departing from SYD on CA, I tried to use my NZ*G to check in some extra bags but wanted to credit the miles to A3. The check in agent employed by QF refused to do that even after checking with a CA agent near her. She even warned me that if I changed my number I would be charged excess baggage fee. I didn't listen to her and asked her to enter the NZ number anyway and had it changed to A3 at the CA service desk at the end of the row. No issue after whatsoever.

I expect it to apply when the carrier's baggage policy states "Star Alliance Gold members" are allowed ... extra bags.

The question then becomes: Am I a *G member because I have a *G card or am I a *G member because I collect miles on my *G card.

Besides the "legalese" I appreciate all the practical tips how to circumvent the problem.

Just out of curiosity: Do carrier's charge each other for extra baggage allowed to "alien" *G members or is it assumed that this will balance out?
