A number of threads have been started with members asking for guidance on which mileage programme they should join. In order to help users I have started this thread to allow people to post their requests for information here and to allow people to offer assistance.
For members asking for information please help people to assist you, can you provide:
(1) What is your home airport? (SFO, LAX, MCO, etc.)
(2) What types of fares do you usually buy ? (C, F, Y, etc.)
(3) How many miles do you usually fly each year? (<25K, 25k-50k, >50k)
(4) Do you have any kind of status at present? What is it? (UA Silver, M&M Senator etc)
(5) What is most important to you in a FFP? (Frequent upgrades on travel, priority services when flying the airline, good award redemption rates, free lounge access, etc.)
(6) Which routes do you fly most often (US Domestic, Transpacific etc)
(7) Preferred Airlines
(8) Do you travel for work or pleasure? (Can you chooose your airlines, class of service?)
GENERAL INFORMATION:
If you fly less than 50k miles per year: it is almost guaranteed that your choice will be between Aegean Airlines, Turkish Airlines, and Asiana Airlines. Please look up these airlines' frequent flier programs, and make a decision as to which best suits your needs.
Some considerations to take into account:
Airlines tend to treat members of their own frequent flier program better than members of other frequent flier programs. If you fly one of these airlines, it is recommended that you choose that airline.
Some airlines have better earning/redemption charts for your pattern. For example, if you fly on cheap fares on a certain airline often, Turkish might give you miles for it, while Aegean might not. However, Turkish Airlines might charge much more for the redemption that you want to make than Aegean.
Asiana Airlines offers lifetime Star Alliance Gold for 500k miles over life. The other 2 airlines do not offer this benefit.
Asiana Airlines has a credit card in the USA and some other countries. If you are interested in credit cards, check to make sure that the program that you join has a credit card in your country.
If you still aren't sure which frequent flyer program is for you after looking these up, feel free to ask on this thread.

This will be very heart braking news for you
Good news as Canadian you can earn kris flyer points through HSBC MasterCard but bad news is it will take you twice as long
The other bad news is that Lufthansa Miles and more and Kris Flyer club membership will charge you a fuel surcharge on each award ticket so first class is going to be over one thousand dollars
The other bad news is if you go with Aeroplan or united you will never find first class because of the situation where there are too many people that want those seats,
So best frequent flyer for what you get is Aeroplan but don't expect first class
Business is available on Turkish which is good
And believe me you are not missing much flying Singapore airline normal first class, in fact it sucks and Lufthansa well that too
Oh by the way a380 is not available for saver redemption on Aeroplan
Unless you are a spending over a hundred thousand dollars a year I would ask you to go with HSBC
Best program is actually SPG Starwood hotel program Because you can change or transfer your points to any airline in the world

Thanks for your suggestions (imslippy & ysrivastava) regarding the credit cards. I really didn't think of the CC possibility being in Canada so I was thinking mostly miles through flights.
We take quite a few flights out of MSP, the KrisFlyer accrual chart shows 100% miles for quite a few of United economy fares
100% - B, E, G, H, K, L, M, Q, S, T, U, V, W, Y
Also KrisFlyer Elite Gold is 50K miles which I believe gets the same accrual rate from United flights. Unfortunately accrual from Air Canada Economy flights for KrisFlyer is very restricted.
By diverting the miles to KrisFlyer rather than Milage plus I will miss out on the United Gold/Platinum/Premier status and free upgrades on United flights. The consensus seems to the complimentary upgrades are getting harder to get so I might not miss out on much.
Thoughts? Anything else I might miss out by sending miles to KrisFlyer rather than MileagePlus or Aeroplan.
PS. KLM/Delta/AA miles will go to Alaska Airlines program.

Hi all, I'm a Singaporean moving to the UK to study full-time this year and will be flying between BHX and SIN at least twice a year, sometimes from LHR instead, so I would probably be flying on LX, TK, LH or SQ with somewhat flexible tickets.

I was hoping someone could help me here. Which Star Alliance program generally cost the fewest miles for an award ticket ? For example, I usually buy my award tickets through United, a first class ticket is 70,000 miles, and I'm usually on either Lufthansa or Asiana metal.
I've done some research, and it appears that the other programs charge much more than 70,000 miles. Flights between Asia and America connecting in Germany with Miles and More were well over 100,000 miles. But perhaps I'm missing something.
I usually fly between LIT, PAR or ICN. I work half a year is Paris, and the other half in Seoul while my family is in Little Rock (LIT).
Would it be best to continue to use my United mileage plus number when I travel on a Star Alliance flight or switch to another FF program such as Miles and More.
My main concern is getting upgrades, lounge access and F class award tickets for the fewest miles, so for these concerns, is UA the best one ?
I'm currently Star Alliance gold, and Mileage plus gold. I usually fly around 50K a year.
Finally, in terms of buying miles... UA seems to be the best as they allow you to buy 100,000 a year. Is this true ?

US Airways charges only 90,000 for roundtrip Business between US and north Asia on any Star carrier, which is a fantastic deal! All probably will change once US Airways joins the dAArk side.
Also note, that US-based carriers don't charge for YQ, the fuel surcharge that ranges between $200-$500 on top of the award redemption. Miles and More and other EU-based carriers will charge for the fuel surcharge.

best value mileage redemption to get long haul flights in a decent business class (no more sloped seats for me thank you)

Swiss/EY EY does quite a nice service from Dublin (nice hard product and like the Dub lounge and free chauffeur to the airport; i like Swiss but they only have one flight Ex Dub a day and the connection times to long haul flights are terrible on the way out; used to like LH but their business class upgrade needs to speed up. Quite like BA too but am biased as i'm just back from a flight where LH put me on BA F due to frankfurt being closed and really enjoyed the flight

Since the changes to M&M i have being putting miles into other programs; have maybe 100k in both EY and BA and in negative miles with LH (just had a F award on the a380). Id like to decide on a proper home for my miles that will reward me with good value C class redemption. I like the family account idea that BA and EY have as i usually fly with my partner and we can bank miles.

PHL is closest, but Newark or Baltimore work

I'll probably do 18k to 26k each year. Next year might have some heavier travel, putting me closer to 40 or 50k miles. A cheap mileage run wouldn't be out of the question...

Priority services would be nice, as would the extra checked bag.

I am a US college student from China. I am recently looking at a cheap UA ticket to Seoul, and that prompts me search for the best *A FF programs. Thanks in advance for your advice!
