I am more interested in any retention offers to keep the card. There is a thread in the Chase forum to add such data points.

Closed account today, and reported my experience on the other thread (received no retention offer). Was able to transfer the CL over to my existing Chase Reserve card.

(1) Hawaii was irrelevant to me and I expect many others. I like to fly F to Hawaii but that option will never be offered on WN. Also plenty of cheap fares on other airlines and you can always use the BofA $99 companion cert on AS (as I did this summer). The CP has been great for both WN and me - I've saved $$$ on airfare for a family member and I have booked family trips on WN that probably would have gone to UA.
(2) One can only speculate as to what extent WN and Chase collaborated on this offer. IMO WN was the driver as seeks to drive off competition intra-California and beyond. The CP allows WN to maintain its high fares and incentivize business travelers to select WN rather than one of the many other programs that offer F seats and TATL/TPAC awards. Chase gets, well, what Chase usually gets.
(3) Why would anyone keep one or both of these cards? If you took the offer you are probably looking to score another CP with credit card signup points, which means you need to cancel the card and wait 2 years. There is no reason to ever put spend on this card and the new premium card offers better perks than both the old Plus and Premier cards. So no need to call retention.

A bit misleading, you need to wait 24 months after the bonus posted and be 4/24 or less to get get another bonus. When you cancel the card has nothing to do with your bonus eligibility.

I normally cancel at the 11 month mark, 8 or so months after the bonus posted.

Good clarification, though there is no reason to hold the card beyond a year and to pay another AF. However note that Chase will not always approve a new card (with bonus) if you hold another card from the same affinity "family." Hyatt is a good example. You can't get the bonus for the new card if you hold the old card. And some have suggested waiting a month between cancellation and new application. Of course this is not a factor if you are cancelling your card a year before applying for the same (or same "family") product.

In the past I never churned as I value my long term relationship with Chase. I am still conservative now and generally only apply for one new Chase card annually. The WN cards were an exception as I wanted the CP for 2 years (a loophole that is now gone unless you apply for business cards too). This also helps to keep me below 5/24 and avoids questions from other issuers. However I am more aggressive about cancelling cards with AF, unless the perks are really valuable (e.g. JPM-R).

Until recently Chase has treated Southwest cards different as we ( myself, my wife and my dad) have received bonuses for all 3 ( actually all 4 cards when the Plus Business was around) cards several times. Of course you had to cancel the product before getting the same card again.............Chase is not Citi where I have had over a dozen Hilton and American Airlines cards open at the same time.

Now Chase won't let you collect more than one personal bonus every 24 months on all personal cards combined.

My wife and I get around 5/24 as one of us goes card free for ~ 2 years while the other gets every card they can.............this way one of us always has CP

Quite convenient that Hawaii service may start right around then.

Hahaha

This one offer got me 2 years of CP! Got the 2018 CP due to the offer, but delayed my min spend until 2018 so I had 40k towards the next CP. Recently hit A-List Preferred again meaning 70k points, which, when combined with the 40k from the card means another year of CP. Though, probably time to cancel the card as I haven't put a penny on it since the min spend was done.

Well they got me with this one. I'm a long-time United Gold or Plat or 1k who finds himself much happier splitting business between WN and AS. It's not that hard to spend $100k on my WN Visa, and I've easily saved $4k on companion tickets. The continued UA service degradation, and increased AS service with the VX acquisition, really change physics for us living in San Francisco.

And--this might seem trivial to some, but UA now sends most deep Asian customers (i.e. not on the Pacific Rim) via NH which is a great airline for those under 5'8. For us taller people, either *A partner OZ, or AS partners like KE or CX have much more comfortable Y seats.

AS also seems to upgrade people who fly them even as Silvers, while UA golds can literally go years without an upgrade.
