Naples

I'll be spending a couple of weeks there in the new Year, attending a course. Accomodation is all taken care of (nothing special, more's the pity )

Can anyone let me know of what there is to do in the vicinity? I've read a little in the guidebooks, and it sounds nice and upscale.

I'm particularly interested in any restaurant recommendations, and tips to spend any free time I find myself with.

Oh and - what's the weather going to be like in early January?

Some links:

This article describes Naples really good:
...Naples has always been extraordinarily pretty, with bright green St. Augustine grass, tall hedges, banyan trees and those palms that lean at 45-degree angles. But now it has a new look money. Only Palm Beach can compare, and Palm Beach seems bulky and dated by comparison. One senses too many ghosts in those old mansions. In Naples everything is lighter, more informal. This is the city that lives the real estate catch phrase "casual elegance." Even the 25-story high-rises that dot the northern end of the beach are airy and almost graceful.

You've heard of boutique hotels; Naples is a boutique town. The restaurants are boutique, the museum is boutique, and the boutiques are really boutique. Naples even has a boutique beach. While most Florida public beaches are surrounded by sun- baked parking lots, Naples's seven-mile strand of white sand is backed by millionaires' mansions, just yards away through some elegantly arranged sea grape...

Some good restaurants are on 5th Avenue South.
I also like Campiello and Tommy Bahama at 3rd Street S.
The weather - I think (and hope) that you can dine al fresco, outside that is ...
Welcome to paradise!

Thanks USAFAN

Upscale was certainly the right word! Looks great - I have to confess that I've been a little disappointed by my previous trips to Florida (Miami & environs), so I'm hoping for something special.

Actually, I like Miami a lot. Especially South Beach, Fisher Island and beautiful Coral Gables (area around Miracle Mile and Biltmore Hotel). Also Little Havanna (Calle Ocho = 8th Street = US-41)

Have just returned and I can report that Naples was indeed a very stunnning location. Civilised, very upmarket and relaxed.

The weather was great and (though I didn't have time to use it) the beach looked pristine.
