With the lack of a decent road to get to the airport, once the new terminal opens I’m not going to be able to do this consistently until...2023?
GPT is a great alternative.

Not really. For me, it would require an extra connection, a much earlier (5 hrs) flight and a segment on an RJ145. No, thanks.

Maybe if you live in Slidell. From my house Uptown, it’s more than an hour’s drive, vs. 25-35 minutes to MSY depending on the time of day. Plus it has far fewer destinations reachable by a direct flight.

True, but my experience at GPT has consistently been <10 minutes from curb to gate - with or without Pre. I don't even worry about direct flights since 99% of my destinations require a connection no matter which airport I depart from.

Gate fitting occurred today. This is the process where the airlines make sure the lines painted for various aircraft have been placed properly and that everything lines up with the jetbridge for their respective gates. Everything went well. Here are some pictures from Spirit Airlines.

TSA equipment is being installed. Confirmed that the ceiling tiles are all in place, so it will be open ceiling above TSA. Baggage claim offices are almost complete. Computer installation at check in area continues. Nearly all of the vendors are closed out. One new piece of information is that the independent lounge The Club and the Vino Volo below it will not be open when the new terminal opens. The area has already been closed off behind a construction wall like those put in at malls when a new store is going in. I know there was a push to have those done this month, but it looks like they will open a couple of months after the terminal officially starts operations.

Construction wall for Vino Volo and The Club

TSA equipment going in. Those are bag screeners on the left.

Well crap. The Club was the one thing about the new terminal I was looking forward to.

At least there will be a ton more restaurant options to select from until The Club and Vino Volo open.

United agent told me yesterday that the Oct. 23 opening date has been pushed back with no definite date at this time.

Question January 2020

I am visiting MSY next January. Const'n delays are normal in such large scale projects. Eh tu, LAX?
Here are my questions:
1. Will the ground transit options be status quo? Is the new terminal next door?
2. Will there be a dedicated Star Alliance lounge?
3. Any FT Do planned for the opening?

You’re making a big assumption: that the new airport will be open in January.
