Mea culpa -- I've never actually managed to find the official list where DRLs are thus designated, and depending on who you ask there are up to 6, incl. eg. Orchard Towers. If you have superior knowledge then please enlighten us @:-)

And a Viet bar is a karaoke joint with darkened windows and lots of Vietnamese ladies in very short skirts sitting around.

appreciate the clarification. I don't mean to be dense, but the karaoke is just a front for the women, right ?

I'm booked at the Astro for a trip in Jan '08 as the transit hotel said they were full. The Astro looked close to SIN and that it has some good food w/in walking distance for a late night munchie upon arrival before turning in.

Astro just sent an email canceling my res as they stated they would be under renovations.

Looks like I'll try one of the other hotels in this thread.

In the same area, Hotel 81 Bugis is *much* nicer than New 7th Storey and doesn't have that short time hotel feel of the Geylang venues. Or, maybe I'm desensitized.

The area isn't nearly as interesting, but it's a lot closer to the tourist stuff, MTR, etc. Tell the taxi driver "Shaw Towers".

S'pore cheap hotels

Although not a hotel, it is cheap. 1bnbSingapore.com is located on 25th floor of an apartmrnt bldg.. Easy cab, subway or bus ride to main attractions. Very clean and well run b & b. I recommend it highly!
