CNNMoney.com reports 12 percent of NW departures are canx for today... also indicates a summer-long work-to-rule campaign by the pilots is in the offing. Quoting from a CNNMoney writethru:
The pilots union is also urging its members to strictly follow the contract on what flights they are willing to fly.
"Fly safe. Fly the contract. Don't fly sick. Don't fly fatigued. Don't fly hungry," the union's hotline message to members recently urged pilots.
The stage could be set for Northwest's version of UA's summer-from-hell in 2000. Management could soon be reaping what it has sown, karma-wise. If only my family didn't have an August booking on NW metal, I could sit back and enjoy the implosion.

They're also providing a great incentive for NW to reduce their numbers by shifting business out to the regionals.
Delta has farmed out its regional business to 8+ regionals, in large part to minimize the effects of obnoxious union actions at the smaller companies.
NW now has 3 but owns two. They should learn from Delta's mistakes with ASA & esp. with Comair. Delta is still saddled with Comair.
If this gets much worse, my bet is that we'll see NW accelerate the acquisition of smaller aircraft to lessen the need for mainline pilots.

When will it get better
If I have a criticism, it is NW's lame attempt to pin this all on the weather - if they have a pilot shortage, then say they have a pilot shortage.
Which raises a question, namely, others on this thread have indicated that 300 pilots have accepted recall, when can we expect the atypical cancellations to stop?

I got rerouted from SJC->MSP->DTW on 6/23 to SJC->ATL->DTW via Delta. Lost a couple hours in the process AND they didn't transfer my FF #, so I have to go back and try to claim the first leg of the flight. I didn't notice that the number wasn't on the ticket until I was in ATL.
I was told that the MSP->DTW leg was cancelled. To NW's credit, they did tell me that it was due to lack of crew---via text message and voice mail.
However, I'm even more pleased that I booked our leisure trip DTW->DEN next week via Fronteir; NW didn't even come close to competing on price, and Fronteir won't charge me $5 for my SnackBox (tm).

This is where the guy making all the moolah (Doug) to come out with a statement, hit the talk shows, etc. and needs to say "We've got a problem... and this is how we're going to fix it... in the short term and the long term"
I realize no one wants to talk about the 800lb gorilla in the elevator, butit needs to come from the top and needs to show that they are being pro-active vs. constantly re-active.
I get a call from my mom at 9am saying her clients flights are cancelled out of DCA-MSP-BIL ... nothing like hearing "Zippppppp whats going on with NWA???" and then she says that they have been re-booked with DL on a 3 segment itin thru ATL and SLC with 35 min between flights in ATL... changing concourses no less... that and they have to pay for their extra hotel room tonight... no info at all from NWA on how this is being handled... mom and her clients are not happy with NWA at the moment...

Taken at face value, nothing is wrong with it. In context, it is union-speak for work to rule & muck things up.

An explanation!
Well, we knew something was up Saturday, and our first thought (after, "$%@#@! we need a hotel!) was that we needed to see Flyertalk and find out what the real deal was, because this was waaaaay out of line. My girlfriend got bumped off her flight to BWI for the 22nd, and was rescheduled to the following day. That was fixed by flying Southwest, though we recieved no compensation (no shock there). Then she was cancelled 3 times on the return leg on both the 25th and 26th on 2 days notice. Reaaaaallllly unacceptable.
Whether its the pilots or the management doesn't ultimately matter from our perspective. Nothing was adequately done to help out those stranded from the airline, and after getting hosed with no recourse (we had a fun time trying to find an agent on the 25th), my girlfriend and her elite status were damn near stuck again with no compensation. Its pretty disgusting all the way around, and the only reasonable thing we can think of is to have me fly through Detroit on SWA until something improves. I'm not holding my breath.

Although we've all been following this here on FT, I heard it for the first time on the local news radio here in the Detroit area. I don't know if it will grow legs, but it's gotten the media's attention.

UA didn't have much goodwill left by the end of the 2000 SFH - and indeed, there were some permanent shifts in traffic flows in many markets, including Newark (where United's "legacy" premium flyers finally jumped to CO, finally making CO the king of EWR), Los Angeles (where UA went from the dominant hub player to a form of multi-carrier cohabitation in the market), London (MIA/EWR/JFK-LHR all gone, as the premium flyers had abandoned ship to other players once United couldn't keep a schedule) to the Chicago hub itself (where AA went from being a clear also-ran to roughly equal with United in many major ex-ORD markets). All of this was manifested in the sharp declines in revenue performance United experienced BEFORE 9/11, and indeed the 2000 SFH and its aftermath were on the primary elements of United's BK filing.
