Post Most of the Sheraton Cancun to be demolished ...

A thousand apologies if this has been posted already here on FT; if so, I've not seen it yet. In any case, the much maligned Sheraton Cancun appears to have its days numbered.

Just stumbled upon this newsy tidbit ---- in brief, it appears that the Sheraton Tower that is already there shall remain open and operate as a Sheraton for the forseeable future. However, the bulk of the old Sheraton lodging buildings will be torn down completely to make way for a new Westin Timeshare concept -- opening date 2007+.

Starwood Timeshare Unit Plans Its First Latin American Property, a Westin
9/20/2005

:ORLANDO, FLA. - Starwood Vacation Ownership (SVO), a division of Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide Inc., is planning its first property, the Westin Lagunamar Ocean Resort, in Latin America.

:Starwood said the property would be the first vacation ownership resort in Cancun, Mexico developed by a major U.S. lodging company.

:The project comprises a resort-wide renovation and reconstruction of the existing Sheraton Cancun, transforming the property into a purpose-built vacation-ownership resort with 296 two-bedroom lock-off villas. The resort is on 18 acres of beachfront property in the heart of Cancun's Zona Hotelera, Cancun's main tourism district.

:"The Mexican market is a strategic location for Starwood Vacation Ownership that will complement our existing locations in some of the most sought-after vacation destinations," said Raymond L. "Rip" Gellein, Jr., chief executive of Starwood Vacation Ownership Inc.

:He said he expected "continued growth in north-south travel patterns throughout North America."

:With the opening of the Westin Lagunamar Ocean Resort, Starwood owns three properties in the area. The company plans more development for the Southeastern part of Mexico, said Osvaldo Librizzi, president of Starwood Hotels & Resorts Latin America.

:The first phase of the project will focus on a complete renovation of all guest rooms in the existing Tower Building, which will remain operating as a hotel under the Sheraton brand. The Resort Building will be demolished, and the timeshare villas will be built in its place. This first phase of construction, including 66 villas (all two-bedroom lock-offs) as well as public buildings, pools and amenities, will be open in 2007. Subsequent phases will be built with a final expected completion date of 2010.

Perhaps I missed something....a search didn't reveal any 'big news' regarding this property--for example, is the sheraton prop in Cancun going to remain a starwood??
As of September 11, 2006, this hotel is no longer part of the family of Starwood Hotels & Resorts properties. There were some rumors that it is being torn down to be replaced (maybe re-branded) at a later date, but I have access to nothing internally that would confirm that.

This hotel means Sheraton Cancun, not the Westin, correct?

There's gotta be more to this .....

That's really wild since for many months now (until recently) this property was shown as reopening in December 2006 as a Sheraton still, but in a smaller form due to the other half of the property's being torn down to make way for the new Westin Timeshare property there.

It strikes me as very odd that after a year or more of consistent renovations and internal work going on at this old Sheraton that, at the 13th hour, Starwood would opt to drop it.

Sounds like there's more to the story, doesn't it???

Unhappy Sheraton Cancun - called last night to check on vacation package

In 2005 I recieved a promo for a Sheraton Vacation in Cancun. After Wilma I called and they said that the hotel was being rebuilt and I would not be able to make a reservation until after the hotel reopened in 2007. I called last night and Sheraton Vacations said that Sheraton "will not have a hotel in Cancun in the foreseeable fortune" and Sheraton Vacations refunded my $256.88. Earlier this year I had called and Sheration Vacations said I could take 4 days at a Westin in California. I opted to wait until 2007 and go to Cancun. This time Sheraton Vacations said they "no longer had the association with Westin" and all they could do was make a refund. I had hoped to go to Cancun with what I thought was a good price but now I will have more flexibility and maybe get a package airline/hotel deal. My wife is turning 40 on March 1st so maybe I will surprise her. Any other suggestions on an affordable vacation to a beach for a trip around March 1st?

I thought it was being rebuilt and at one point they had a spent a yr doing it. Is it possible they left spg hence the closure? Or switched to timeshares?

I saw the old Sheraton CUN about 2 months ago and it was being demolished in front of my eyes. It was already half way down and was in shambles.

Previous poster is correct, however. Following Wilma, the plan had been for the Sheraton to be reborn as a much nicer property than it had become (which is to say very tired, dated, etc). However, somewhere along the way, that plan derailed when investors stepped up to the plate for the new Westin to be built on the same parcel of land.

My strong suspicion is that once the new Westin is open, the current Westin CUN will rebrand to a Sheraton. Most folks would concur that the current Westin CUN falls a little short of global Westin standards and would fit better under the Sheraton umbrella moving forward. Just a hunch on my part, we'll see what happens.
