I saw the old Sheraton CUN about 2 months ago and it was being demolished in front of my eyes. It was already half way down and was in shambles.
Previous poster is correct, however. Following Wilma, the plan had been for the Sheraton to be reborn as a much nicer property than it had become (which is to say very tired, dated, etc). However, somewhere along the way, that plan derailed when investors stepped up to the plate for the new Westin to be built on the same parcel of land.
My strong suspicion is that once the new Westin is open, the current Westin CUN will rebrand to a Sheraton. Most folks would concur that the current Westin CUN falls a little short of global Westin standards and would fit better under the Sheraton umbrella moving forward. Just a hunch on my part, we'll see what happens.
