membership year vs. qualifying year
I tried searching for this, but was probably entering the wrong terms. I'm a little confused on the difference between the two "years" for status. I'm going to complete a Gold challenge on Dec 31, 2006. Does this mean that my newly acquired gold status will only good until Feb 2007? I hope not, or maybe it wasn't wise to do it at the end of the calendar year

For challenges started after 16 June 06 it will give you status through to end Feb 08. For those started before June 06 it will be through to end Feb 07

Didn't think it was possible, but AA reviewed my account the last few months & upgraded me to PLT without my first registering for the challenge. They retroactively applied the flights!

You just called them up?
Hi RossO,
So you just called the number up and asked them to review your account? What's the secret? hehe.. I just found out about this challenge last week. I had accrued around 10k EQ points since last month. Do you think they'll upgrade me to Platinum too? =) Cheers.

long story short- I was non-elite at the time & registered for the promotion to become PLT b/w 9/15-12/15 if i flew the necessary miles (essentially the challenge rules, but not the official challenge). I qualified for GLD and then emailed about PLT. I was told that I wasn't targeted (others have posted on this) for the PLT promotion so they couldn't give it to me. They invited me to register for a new Challenge. I kindly responded and said I couldn't sign up for the challenge. They responded saying they reviewed my records and figured that if I had registered for the challenge as opposed to the non-targeted promo, I would have qualified. So, the rep said upgraded me instantly. Got the email about an hour ago & sure enough my account status shows PLT.
Rep also said I'd be disqualified from doing the challenge again to qualify for 2008 status.

Here's my challenge story (with a happy ending)
Thanks to all you sharing people (and FewMiles' website), I signed up for a Platinum challenge in early Oct. The CSR I spoke to at the time said I had to pick between G and Plat, I couldn't do both. I was a sure bet for G, so I took the risk and went for Plat. At the time, I was a freshly minted AA member with 0 segs and 0 miles.
Ten wks later, here is my situation:
Status: PLATINUM
Summary Date: Dec 2006
Program to Date Miles: 19,707
YTD Elite Qualifying Points: 13,517
YTD Elite Qualifying Miles: 15,324
YTD Elite Qualifying Segments: 16
Miles Towards Elite Upgrades: 4,383
Miles with Expiration Deferred Through 12/04/09: 19,707
Total Available Award Mileage + 19,707
I have a question. When do I start earling 500-mile upgrades? Will it be when I hit 20,000 EQM, i.e. 10,000 miles after I became a Plat?
Thanks for all your help.

Slight correction: you will get your first set of stickers when your "Miles Towards Elite Upgrades" counter hits 10,000. Your EQM counter would be at 20,941 (because the challenge is based on points--not miles--and you were already above 10k EQM when you hit 10k EQP).

Any aadvantage to earning plat the natural way?
I made PLAT in August by doing a challenge. My understanding is that I now have PLAT status through February 2008. Now I am about 2000 miles away from earning PLAT the "natural" way by the end of 2006. Is there any reason for me to take a flight just to hit the 50,000 EQM by the end of 2006? In particular, will making PLAT by actually flying the miles this year make me eligible to do another challenge next year, if necessary? (I know that the normal rule is that you cannot do challenges two years in a row.)

Can't say for sure, but making PLT the real way would work in your favor in argument to be able to take another challenge...since you would have earned real PLT. It will then depend upon the leeway that AAgents have to sign people up for challenges in extenuating circumstances.
If you think you can make PLT again next year, and will not need to challenge, then no point in doing it naturally now, though.
Cheers.

Delay with status update?
I've read through this thread and have seen people with problems seeing the correct status because miles/points haven't posted. In my case, all of the miles/points/segments add up, but I'm not seeing any changes. Here's my story:
What gives? I was thinking that maybe those two flights worth 1,233 points did not actually get counted like the CSR said. Or maybe it's because it's the holidays. I'm confused.
- Started PLT Challenge Nov. 10th with a start date of Nov 1st. I had two flights already posted between the 1st and the 10th, but the CSR got the manager to get those points (1,233) to count towards the challenge. Through the end of October, I had 4,435 Elite Qualifying Points, meaning that, in theory, I should be PLT by reaching 14,435 within the next 3 months.
- Flew the "challenge-completing" flight on Dec. 26th. This flight has posted as well. I now have 26 Elite Qualifying Segments and 14,741 YTD Elite Qualifying Points, but no change in status. The bonus doesn't show up either.

What gives? Could the fact that one flight should get me to GLD the "regular" way and the following flight should complete my challenge cause a mix-up? I was thinking that maybe those two flights worth 1,233 points did not actually get counted like the CSR said, but shouldn't I be at least GLD if I have 26 Elite Qualifying Segments? Or maybe it's because it's the holidays. I'm confused.

When do I get my card
So, once I get pass the 10k barrier and see the magic word PLATINUM BONUS -- what is the usual waiting time to getting my set of PLAT cards -- is it possible to get them in time for a trip on Jan 16????? Would be nice to enjoy the fruits of labour....

No need to have the card to enjoy the fruits. Normally I see my tier status printed on OW boarding passes.

I must have missed the posting mentioning this.
