Current 2023 First Class meal service status -- FC meal service consists of plated meals (including hot options) between hubs and to/from most larger stations (exception stations listed below only receive cold meal box options) on flights over 900 miles which depart before 9PM (scheduled). Pre-selection is available on routes with plated meal offerings (except those operated by an A321neo), while it is not available on cold meal box routes. In addition, flights over 2300 miles will receive meal service in FC for departures after 9PM.
Snack boxes are generally offered on redeye flights under 2300 miles.
Meal service is not provided on flights under 900 miles.
All D1 flights, domestic and international, receive hot meal service.
Current exception stations where only cold meal boxes (with no pre-selection) are offered in FC on 900+ mile flights (both to and from station). Market/Bistro snack boxes are served on flights that are AM return flights to hubs from previous evening arrivals (as the cold meal boxes would require refrigeration overnight ):

I think they're now trying to distinguish which flights get a sad box and which don't, "Snack Breakfast" (A refreshing breakfast snack box, as it's described, lol) is listed under meal service. The problem? It's listed for LAS-JFK and LAS-MSP ...
So I imagine/hope that's a mistake.

The best way to check these in my experience is to go to the SPECIAL SERVICES and try to select a special meal....if it doesn't work, plan on enjoying a sandwich from home while paying DL full price

I flew an AA breakfast flight yesterday (LAS-DFW). It was a very good meal. And beautifully plated. Unlike the above photo. So often Delta meals look like the people assembling them just throw stuff on the plates. Crustless frittata with diced sweet potatoes and broiled cherry tomatoes. Fresh fruit-blueberries, cantaloupe, pineapple, honeydew melon. All ripe. And a scone with butter. Far superior to what Delta offers. I preordered, and don’t remember the other choices. But my seatmate had a smoked salmon plate accompanied by a bagel and fresh fruit that I would have been happy with.

Here’s the Lemon Chicken that has been reported on several times already. I really wanted to like this meal based on favorable reviews. But to me, it really gave off a “processed” flavor. That said, the chicken was bone-in and one of the better preparations I’ve had on airplanes. Not dry or rubbery. The potatoes were nothing special, and the broccolini was just average. The salad was odd and mostly tasteless, even with the pesto. Mostly just enjoyed the burrata. That said, the cannolis were excellent! One of the best desserts I’ve had on delta.
The FA seemed to be encouraging people to switch to the crab and shrimp salad. Those that did seemed to enjoy it. The other choice was the pizza, which smelled amazing!
Great service from the ATL crew.

Found this gem on my HNL-JFK flight. The FA told me she found it way back in cabinet. I wonder if it was for International flights as I've never seen it on domestic flights.

Flew MSP-PSP and got the box! This is a 1400-mile flight that departs at 9am. I know there is catering in MSP; what's going on?

Any flight that goes to and from a “box station” (aka no catering facilities ) gets double catered at the hub with the cold boxed meals. Pretty pathetic if you ask me since DL would always double cater plated meals pre-COVID out of hubs to outstations with no catering but I guess this is the new DL experience along with being cheap in PS and serving the new “enhanced” entrees in Y style cardboard bowls.

It's not acceptable. They have every ability to properly cater from MSP. I spent a lot of miles to purchase first-class seats as a treat for our vacation, and I'll be writing to Delta and asking for a partial refund of those miles. I knew there were still some sad boxes out there, but it never occurred to me that they would serve them on one of the longest domestic routes from MSP, a major hub, on mainline fleet.

I’m assuming that the new seasonal MSP-VPS flight is going to be sad boxes because of a lack of catering on the VPS side. (Route is scheduled to exist as of April because Sun Country is also trying MSP-VPS)

Oh wow! Totally wish we could get a seasonal MSP-ECP route as it would help with ANC connections. But would of course be in the same boat as VPS with catering.

(Local advice- Skip the sad box for MSP-VPS and then grab a substantial lunch at Doc’s Oyster Bar in Valparaiso on a bayou not too far from the airport once you get in.)

Looks like February non-D1 TCON menu is the same (flying ATL - SJC next week). Guess I need to decide whether to go chicken or the pizza -- something about a shrimp/crab combo on a plane has me wary (just shrimp I'd probably be okay with it).
Flying for work so may end up going pizza and just eating during the layover and treating the pizza as a snack.
