Not sure about the security queues at SFO - haven't connected I-D there in a while - but it does not involve a train or a shuttle bus. My personal opinion is that your ORD connection is doable, but could be tight. The SFO connection is less likely to be disrupted. The question is, when is the next ORD-PHX flight? If things don't work out at ORD, are you that much worse off than going through SFO in the first place?

You didn't specify which cabin you're in, but another consideration may be that the Polaris lounge is open at ORD in case you get delayed here.

I would pick SFO for two reasons. 1) longer TATL, so more time to enjoy a comfortable seat and decent J service. Id rather have a lie flat and then connect to a recliner for an hour flight vs. 3.5+ hrs in one with probably crappy F service. 2) ORD in winter can be unpredictable.

I am in PY so no Polaris for me! Indeed, I was tending for SFO since I prefer a longer TATL (even in Y). I am dreading the "last leg" of a long trip. In any case, there is no availabilty in PY on MUC-SFO, so I am going for the MUC-ORD. The good thing is that there is another ORD-PHX flight later (same for SFO-PHX). Thanks all!

I'd choose SFO. The connection is longer and it's arguably easier to connect from international to domestic with all other things being equal. If you're flying business TATL then that would persuade me even more to choose the longer segment to SFO.

The ATS (people mover train) is back up and running 10:30am-10:30pm (buses at other times). You'll clear customs at T5 and take the train to T1 or T2 where you will go through security for your onward flight.

T-90 door opens
T-85 exit plane
T-80 in line for passport control
T-70 clear passport control
T-65 at ATS platform
T-55 at T1
T-50 in TSA line
T-45 clear of TSA
T-35 at gate
T-15 door closes
Just to confirm I made the connection, albeit tight.

T-90 a/c at the gate but waited ground staff to connect the bridge
T-80 exit plane
T-77 in line for passport control
T-57 clear passport control (took time because of somehow long moving queues but also because officer took much time with the person in front of me)
T-52 at ATS platform (didn't have to wait)
T-42 at T1/T2
T-40 in TSA line (Premier)
T-25 clear of TSA
T-22 at gate (B10, I might had to run a bit with my shoe laces off. I arrived when boarding was still in process)
T+15 delay with a bit take-off

Thanks for the run-down! Fun to compare it to my estimate.

I underestimated the passport and TSA line times, and overestimated walking times.

Sixty five minutes seems way too pessimistic but maybe they're assuming absolutely everything goes wrong.

I'd keep an eye on the Midwest forum as an O'Hare employee who posts at times often will mention any significant changes coming up to inter-terminal transportation. He's the one gave the heads-up on when the ATS was going back into service well in advance. BTW, the airside bus, pre-COVID, stopped at both T1 and T3 before going to T5.

Security lines at T5 can get crazy at times. Haven't departed from there in a while, but last time I was there, i recall a good 30 minutes even for J pax (no dedicated TSA Pre then), much longer in the normal lines.
