When it’s all said and done, the demise of the AS award chart will have been greatly exaggerated. Book if you find a J/F flight you want (and think are able) to fly, not because you speculate there will be a massive devaluation in the future

Found one a week earlier than my intended date but I can still make it work. Now how many layovers (not stopovers) was it on a one way? Sorry Mileage Plan Newbie here.

In theory unlimited layovers, if there’s space. In practice it’s whatever the agent let’s you book. What are you trying to book?

If you're talking < 24 hour stops, as many as you can fit in. Are you trying to go ANC-FAI-SEA-PSP-SFO-PDX-STS-LAX-HKG-JNB with 23 hour layovers in each city or something for funsies?

AS's engine does allow for some backtracking- I've booked MEX-PHX as MEX-DFW-SEA(stop)-LAX-PHX as a mixed AA/AS award, and then changed to eliminate LAX as MEX-DFW-SEA(stop)-PHX. I've also booked LAS-SEA(stop)-LAX-HKG-BKK. You won't be able to do something like SEA-ORD-SFO-JFK-HKG-BKK though. But SEA-LAX-HKG-BKK-SIN with <23 hours in LAX and BKK, stop in HKG as long as you want should work.

Be aware that AS is only flying SEA-YVR right now. As border closures are extended AS is cancelling SEA-YYJ/YLW/YYC/YEG flights a month at a time. It is unlikely that AS will be operating SEA-YYC in the next few months or even this year. However, you can still book the flight if it is in the calendar.

I would suggest not waiting too long to book your itinerary so you can include the SEA-YYC segment. If the SEA-YYC segment is ultimately cancelled (it will be) AS should reaccommodate you. AS has agreements with AC & WS. It might be possible to fly SEA-YVR(AS)-YYC(AC) or SEA-YYC(AC) despite it being an award.

thanks for that. Yes I still managed to find some space in AS first for YYC. I was using AA to look for CX space in F and J but the AS agent said she could only see space in coach. Should I use QF?

What is the departure time? If it is within the first few hours of the day, 12a-3a for example, AS often won't see that space. Adding a 1:00 am parameter as a desired departure time into the search usually does the trick. You can ask the AS agent to add the parameter.

I would check to see if the space is also showing on QF and/or BA. QF has been my go to. I can't speak to the reliability of booking what AA shows with MP. The tips & tricks of booking CX premium cabins, Pre COVID-19 and Pre announcement of joining oneworld may no longer hold true in the current environment.

That did the trick. So thankful for the FT community. I was able to book it but unfortunately my AS domestic legs are in coach. For some reason the agent said that she couldn’t see any space in F even though I can see space using Alaska’s own site. Not too bothered as it’s not a long flight. She did say that it’s possible to reissue my ticket once there’s space.
