If you're talking < 24 hour stops, as many as you can fit in. Are you trying to go ANC-FAI-SEA-PSP-SFO-PDX-STS-LAX-HKG-JNB with 23 hour layovers in each city or something for funsies?
AS's engine does allow for
some backtracking- I've booked MEX-PHX as MEX-DFW-SEA(stop)-LAX-PHX as a mixed AA/AS award, and then changed to eliminate LAX as MEX-DFW-SEA(stop)-PHX. I've also booked LAS-SEA(stop)-LAX-HKG-BKK. You won't be able to do something like SEA-ORD-SFO-JFK-HKG-BKK though. But SEA-LAX-HKG-BKK-SIN with <23 hours in LAX and BKK, stop in HKG as long as you want should work.
