Marriott Tbilisi, Georgia [Master Thread]

If you have also stayed at the Radisson Blu or the Rooms Hotel Tibilisi, now part of the Starwood family, comparisons would be welcomed.

I had a 2 night stay at this property recently during the Christmas weekend.
Location:
Close to the Freedom/Liberty square (not sure which is the correct one), about 15-20 mins walk. It's on the main avenue running through the city, Rustaveli (Shorta). The airport bus (37) stops alongs the bus stops on this avenue. There is a metro station (Liberty square) next to the Galleria Tbilisi (a fairly new shopping mall), which is about a 15 min walk down towards Liberty square or Rustaveli Metro station (towards Hero square). [The Rooms hotel is a further 10 mins walk from the Rustaveli Metro station]. Basically if you have no problem walking, from the hotel, you can walk to most of the different major tourist attractions in Tbilisi. Close by to the hotel are the Parliment of Georgia, the University theater, the National Opera and Ballet (where you can get some cheap tickets for some of the performances). There is a small park close to the hotel. There are a couple of museums in the vicinity and an uphill climb of about 15 mins, you can reach the funicular up to the Mtatsminda park. There are lots of shops on the avenue.
Check-in:
I did an online check-in requesting for early check in (flight arrived at an ungodly hour of 4.30 am local time). Arrived at the hotel around 6.30 am and as expected no room was available (I guess it is not because of room availability, it is just that they did not want to give a room so early - occupancy rate was only like 40-50 guests as I found out later). Anyway, they were kind enough to let me wait in the Executive lounge and slightly over 0800 am, they informed that I could enter my room. I don't think I received an upgrade, but at this stage I did not care.
I was asked for my choice of Plat Arrival gift and I chose the F&B - which had some nice choices.
Room:
The hotel is still a traditional Marriott, so the interior is the old school Renaissance type of interior (not my cup of tea), but well, ok everything was still in good condition and functioned. Bed were comfortable and there was tea/coffee making facilities. Internet speed was ok, a bit on the slower side but was stable. there was a nice seating area in the corner of the room. The size of the room was on a smaller side, as there was not really much area to place your luggage, luckily I managed to use the wardrobe to keep the large luggage and the rests scattered around the room. The view from the room was towards the city including the river and some parts of the Mtatsminda mountain (especially the obvious telecommunication tower which you see all the way from the airport).
The bathroom had no walk-in shower, only a bath tub. Water pressure and temperature was good to have a nice shower. The size of the bathroom was good, with the usual toiletries provided.
TV channel selection was ok. There is a safe in the wardrobe, though since I had my luggage in there too, it did take some maneuvering to put and take things out in beween.
Breakfast:
As an elite member, you can have it either in the lounge or in the main breakfast room. There was quite a good variation with some local delicacy. Due to the low occupancy, the place was never crowded, the most crowded during my stay was on the Monday (a normal working day in Georgia). Breakfast room staff was ok and did come over to help if they see you looking lost. There was eggs to order available and some good Georgian dishes.
Executive lounge:
The lounge is on a smaller side, but this was not a problem during my stay as normally I would be the only person in the lounge. Only on a few occasions did I see one or two other people in the lounge. The morning selection was ok (limited compared to the main breakfast room) and the evening selection was very good, 3 hot dishes which you can make a meal out of and the best thing was that they had Georgian based dishes which was delicious even for hotel standard. The lounge attendants were very warm and friendly and very proud when asked about the different Georgian dishes and culture. Only complain about the lounge is the setup, basically it is very restaurant style like so it's not really a place that you will stay too long as it does not have that cozy atmosphere. There is only 1 sofa set, but again I don't see someone sitting there as the layout of the lounge is just not sufficient to have both tables and sofa/lounging area at the same time. There are some good alcoholic and non-alcoholic selection during the evening hours.
Staff:
In general, all the staff at the hotel were very warm and friendly and always willing to help. All staff spoke good English, so language will not be an issue. Only be careful about the enthusiastic housekeeping staff. They are a bit too effective as they tend to throw things away if it looks like rubbish to them. I brought with me some special empty boxes to put my wines in and left them on the table, without realizing actually, on my last day during packing, I only discovered that they were thrown away. So I had to go around asking for boxes in order for me to bring my wines back safely in my check-ins. (which was a difficult task too, as it seems they just like to get rid of things as soon as possible if they are not useful - had a hard time getting the boxes). This "fast cleaning" behavior seems to be part of everywhere, even at restaurants, they tend to take your plate away as soon as it's empty (which reminds me so much of when flying with Aeroflot - the same behavior). So if you have anything that you want to keep but can be seen as rubbish, do keep it safely in the wardrobe or luggage.
General:
A very good hotel especially the staff. The interior decoration might not be a cup of tea for everyone, but my stay was comfortable and it was made nicer with the nice staff (especially those in the lounge). However, I am still baffled why with such a low occupancy rate they still maintained quite a high rate. If they had much better promotions, they might have more guests as I've never felt so alone in a hotel before, during those few days I hardly ever bumped into any other guests. I would however still like to try out "The Rooms" hotel the next time or maybe the newly Moxy down by the river if I am back in the city. Tbilisi itself is a nice an upcoming city, hopefully it does not become over commercialized. (Currently in the main old town area, every corner you see a restaurant offering Georgian cuisine or a wine store with free wine tasting or some tour company offering tours).
Cheers!

Tbilisi Marriott Hotel
Marriott Tbilisi = Nice Suite is Great Location (17 Photos)
Tbilisi Marriott Hotel
I normally stay at Sheraton Grand in Tbilisi but I added one night at Marriott towards the end of my recent trip to compare and steer my future stays.I think both hotels are nice and have generous elite loyalty benefits, and they have different strengths and weaknesses so they can cater to different guests.Marriott is best for location, service, and bright(er) rooms, whereas Sheraton Grand wins for the newer rooms / better condition, and great lounge and breakfast.

Location
Marriott is located on Rustaveli street right in city center, less than 10-minute walk from Freedom Square so great location and much better than Sheraton Grand which is a 30-minute walk from city center and also not so close from the nearest metro station.
Room
I booked the entry level room at Marriott and was upgraded as Ambassador Elite to the Grand Suite listed at 60-65 sqm.The suite had nice hardwood floor in the living room, and for me the main advantage was that it was brighter than the suites at Sheraton Grand which I find too dark. The suite at Marriott also had a convenient half bathroom close to the entrance in addition to full bathroom off the bedroom which had a shower separate from the bathtub. There was a huge outdoor terrace with many chairs although it was not entirely private because the walls between rooms were only partially blocking the view so if the neighbors had been outside as well, we would be able to see each other.
A couple of things which I liked a bit less about Marriott, unfortunately the hardwood floor did not extend to the bedroom it was entirely carpet. In addition there were some minor signs of mold in the shower and generally speaking not as fresh hardware as the recently renovated Sheraton Grand.
The bathroom toiletries were the brand Acca Kappa which I had not seen before, apparently its developed in Italy and made in Turkey, from a British company.

Dining
Happy hour 5:30-7:30pm was decent but not as great as Sheraton Grand for both quality and spread in my opinion. At Marriott the warm dishes where ok but potato gratin and meatballs were not as enjoyable as the upscale protein dishes of skewers with veggies at Sheraton, not to mention that cold options were more varied and more interesting at Sheraton too.For drinks Sheraton Grand had sparkling wine but Marriott only red and white wine. For the venue I also thought Sheraton was better Marriotts club was a long and narrow room with a dense seating arrangement.

Breakfast was available in the restaurant, not in the lounge.Breakfast was fine at Marriott but not as nice as Sheraton, the one exception is that Marriott had sparkling wine available whereas at Sheraton its been eliminated from breakfast recently.

Service
Service was very good at both Sheraton Grand and Marriott but if I had to say which one was better I would say the edge goes to Marriott as being a bit more polished.
Overall
Overall I can recommend Marriott especially if location is important, but for people who are more agnostic about location, the Sheraton Grand suites and the food & beverage were a notch above in my opinion.

Thanks!
EDIT: NV found your review of Sheraton. Looks great too! I'll be there for 5 nights and 2d will be spend exploring old Town, the rest going out the city. So of the 2, which do you recommend?

Regarding physical 'niceness' Sheraton can feel more grandiose with the huge atrium and open space with all floors looking down at the reception area.
Have a nice trip!

I feel like sh#t canceling Marriott now after asking the GM for an upgrade. And couldn't split my stays between the 2 because of the promo they have right now of stay 4 nights or more, get 25% off.
Decisions decisions!
I just like your photos of the grand suite so much compared to the executive suite of Sheraton!

After this Tbilisi, will be at Reges Cesme and Bodrum Edition so hoping for a wonderful experience just like you had on those properties!
BTW, Edition bodrum is 369 euros (less 50 euro dining credit), so 319 euros and Caresse is 392 euro flex.

) . Have to say this was one of the best decisions ever Marriott wise! The GM and Director of Rooms Marina were so gracious enough to pre-upgrade me to their Presidential Suite the day after my booking!
Really treated like royalty here and they (from bellmen, to front desk, to restaurant staffs, and especially the old lady with curly red hair at the lounge) were also so kind, and warm, and hospitable that I really felt like they were family.
Nothing seems to be a no. And they all give out this positive and good vibes that radiate throughout the hotel.

PS: It actually came out cheaper staying here over the Sheraton Grand since they only charge 75 GEL for hotel service PCR. Whereas SG charges about 140 Gel (or 120 can't remember). Plus their airport limo service is only 65 GEL, whereas SG was more than that.

Wouldn't hesitate staying here again, simply because the folks here are super nice and happy and welcoming. Recommend this place 110%!!

Service at Marriott is a strong point indeed, not that Sheraton Grand is bad but Marriott is a notch above.

Just wanted to give a heads up to check your credit card statement. The credit card charge on my Amex Bonvoy shows the hotel charge as 'GMT Hotels'. As such, the 5x Bonvoy points were not credited - just 2x base.
I put in a query with Amex explaining that I stayed at the Marriott Tbilisi, booked directly through the Marriott website, and have a folio from Marriott Tbilisi. This had to be looked into. No adjustment on the next statement. Called back and was told about the note on file that 'GMT Hotels' couldn't be found on the Marriott website, so no points can be awarded. Sigh,
This second CSR was quite helpful. Her manager approved 'good will' adjustment for the appropriate points.
Same thing happened at the Le Meridien Batumi. This stay posted to my credit card as 'Batumi Tower Ltd'. Just 2x base points for this credit card charge as well.
Credit card charges for Sheraton Batumi and Sheraton Grand Tbilisi posted fine.

And for anyone with aspirations for an upgrade to supatight80's presidential suite, be aware that there are 'presidential suites' without the balcony. We were also upgraded to a presidential suite for our August four night stay. Our room looks very similar to supatight80's but not nearly as grand and with only little Juliet balconies. Not a terrace you could sit on. And not anything close to that view.
Our reservation was pre-upgraded before the next time I logged into my account. Certainly a few weeks prior to our arrival. Based on photos on the Marriott website, I thought we'd be in the presidential suite with supatight80's large balcony and beautiful view.
We still had a very nice upgrade to be sure. Maybe you just want to ask specifically for the JW Bush Presidential Suite.

Added: Just thought I should add that I requested a room near my kids room. The kid's room was adjoining our suite which made it very much like a two bedroom. Their room was off the dining room and an adjacent butlers? kitchen. We were on the third floor.
