Thanks for quoting this, but I just did a search and couldn't find it. If I did, I'd delete it as spam, but there is no FT member named LaCure. If there was at one time, most likely the account was banned, probably for spamming.

If I got that wrong, can you PM me a link?

I have a couple of businesses and sit on a couple of boards. 330 days is a bit misleading since I rent/own places or stay with friends/family in the cities where I have to travel a lot. It's lot easier than living out of suitcase (in fact I usually travel with just a business backpack.) It's nothing like the real road warriors who do a 100+ nights in hotels, full days of meetings, etc.

My goal is to travel roughly every other weekend, so with holidays, etc. in there I'm doing 20-25 trips per year (all domestic, my favorite destinations are SFO, SEA, PDX, DEN, LAX, SAN, PHX, MDW, BWI, LGA, STL, SJU, and BOS). Income around 45k. I probably spend about 8k on travel per year all told, which would be significantly more without points/miles.

My wording was unclear...

I did a quick search for 'luxury rentals airbnb Paris' and this companies profile came up.

My intent was solely to show that there are luxury vacation agencies and properties available on airbnb, if one is willing to forego the soft product an excellent luxury hotel provides.

I did not pull the information from an FT posting.

Thanks 5khours. That does sound a bit easier than typical business travel (and I would guess that you don't end up in crap hotels in little places in the middle of nowhere too often!). But I still don't think I envy you.

I spend a lot during my holidays especially on hotels where I usually crave for the best of the best in the city I visited. However, I also do a lot of research before I select the property and if I feel I am not getting the money worth, then I scale back and spent only for decent accomodation.

Travel is the largest category of spend in our household budget. I drink drip coffee from the grocery store (the horror!), but I will not scrimp or compromise when it comes to travel.

I take around 8-10 trips per year. The trip starts at the airport so F/J tickets are a must. Besides, I need to experience those cabins for client research

I do use points and miles where prudent for air, but it seems to rarely work out so I tend to be more of a hoarder. I rarely use hotel points. Generally only when a stay at something like a Courtyard or Homewood Suites is required and the rates seem egregious.

For me, the luxury is in the experience. I just got back from a stay at Hacienda Chichen in the Yucatan. It's the best hotel in the area. My room was quiet, clean, and comfortable with nice linens and air conditioning. The food was amazing. The landscaping and overall aesthetics were beautiful. I could walk down a private path to Chichen Itza. There was no room service, no phone or TV, Internet was lobby only, and yes I saw spiders, but the experience was pure luxury.

As a general rule, I want to stay in the best hotel (for me) in any given location. I tend to lean toward boutique luxury properties as a personal preference, and I have a thing for Rosewood, but there are other factors that influence my decision.

I actually don't mind crap hotels in little places, but I'd rather sleep on a park bench than in a typical room in a mediocre boring cookie cutter hotel chain.

The answer for me depends strongly in what you do consider within the travel budget....I personally spend big (relatively of course) money a part of the Hotel and Flights as an example dining (often a meal cost me MUCH more then the luxury hotel rate) or first seat row at special events/shows....and of course Ms. Daddy shopping budget while traveling should be taken seriously in account
Since I was young and the best I could afford was a youth hostel with 15 sleeping in the same room to me a travel budget should be managed in a way that you have sufficient money to enjoy the places where you go...
i know we are in the luxury hotel forum but traveling it is not only about the hotel, isn't it?

I actually depress myself with how much I spend on Holidays so I prefer not to think about it! just take the Business class flights London - Hawaii for 3.. with BA, then 2-3 weeks in of lux hotels )-; Good news is that with the falling euro, staying on Cote D'Azur (and eating there) is 20% cheaper than it used to be!

I agree with this approach. In some cities where hotels are very expensive due to demand, and even the best hotels available are not necessarily that great, it can make sense to scale back to a decent four star hotel. This is particularly true if one will not be spending a lot of time at the hotel anyway.

Ahhh. This is where Mr. Ericka and I actually save some money. We're just not into shopping. We usually buy small charming remembrances from our trip, but nothing very expensive. The only item we bought that cost > $1000 was a marble table from Agra. I'm looking at it now. All these years later and it's still one of my favorite things in the house.

Two DINKs early 30s with a very finite window before we have kids thus take a break from travel, so not setting a budget (and even with that probably spend less than anyone here traveling with a family). Travel as schedule allows which is probably two longer trips per-year and shorter-haul longer weekends.

The_Daddy, your comments seem applicable to cities, there are places besides cities

It's a difficult question as it depends year on year.

I would say it ranges from 20 to 40k. I'm in my extremely late 20s (turning to the next decade in two months) and travel 6 months a year for work which helps mileage-wise and a bit for hotel points which will allow me to spend 5 nights at the PH NYC in July instead of paying for it (in which case I wouldn't stay at the PH).

I travel either with my girlfriend, one or two friends or family.
