Marriott-family hotels in "xx" means all Marriott brand hotels in that city. It does not mean hotels that are family friendly, although there could be some family friendly ones on the list. But it refers to the various brands. Marriott-family hotels in XX usually have posts asking which property is better, etc, & trip reports are usually in the property specific threads."

They didn't have a lounge previously & had to carve one out of available space. Ground floor might have been the only place for it vs. transforming guest rooms into one & losing that revenue.

Note the description says full buffet breakfast vs. cont'l breakfast. Be great if that's true!

Do report back after your stay, if we don't have a report before then.

Cheers.

I just booked a room at the Carlton this coming Saturday night for $179 + tax (AAA rate). No other Marriott family hotel in Manhattan had a rate lower than the Carlton!

I agree. I booked a stay first week of August on the weekends for two nights an average of 189 + tax. Fantastic rate and by far much better than any other Marriott property in Manhattan.

Looking for an opinion so thanks in advance.

Given a choice between the JW Essex House and the Ren Times Sq which would be best for a special weekend where we will see Wicked on Friday night and probably do Il Mulino for dinner on Saturday night. Currently have reservations at the Ren but now thinking Essex House would be nicer. I think it would still be walking distance to the Gershwin. This is a points stay if that matters, but both are the same points for the stay.

As far as the location goes, The Essex house is fairly close to Il Mulino and I prefer that location. I enjoy walking around the city but usually my company prefers to take the subway or taxi instead of a walk from the Essex house to Wicked or the other theaters and you have a couple of good subway choices to get there.

I have stayed at the Marquis in Times Square many times but for the last year or so, I have been going to either the Essex house or the RCCP because of the location. We like the shopping in that area, Central park, good subway stops nearby, and having a good choice of restaurants, deli's, etc.

Thanks. I forgot there are two Il Mulino locations. I was thinking about the other one but would imagine either location is fine? Or, do you have another recommendation for Italian?

I'm afraid I wouldn't be a good source for recommendations for Italian restaurants. I'm sure others can recommend favorites.

Other cuisines though I can help. And when in doubt, Zagat is your friend. I find most of their ratings to be spot on.

Both great rates for Manhattan full service hotels in general, but just FANTABULOUS for a classic like the Carlton!

That is the first I have heard of a hotel doing that, a very nice touch indeed. Has anyone else experienced the benefit of converting an unused $10 F&B credit to points upon checkout?

Booking a suite with points in NYC

Planning a trip to New York in November with my sister and girlfriend, and want at least a 1 bedroom suite with sofabed. There's plenty of standard rooms available at 30k points a night, but no suites even listed.

Is there a separate upgrade process? Will I have different inventory if I call in?

Sometimes upgraded rooms/suites are available with points online; however, most hotels do not have them available online as a general rule. If it's not available online, then it doesn't hurt to call the hotel and ask.

Booking a suite with points in NYC

It generally seems to be only resorts offering points upgrades online.

so its better to use points than to pay with all these tricks like gift card buying coupons or waiting for expedia hotwire or other type of deals?

as a platinum member and staying on a weekend whats the better place to stay for upgrades and perks?

thanks so much for your reply. i really appreciate it

Note that is the NYC marathon weekend. I am running and still have not booked a room. I would like to stay in the city but not for $400 a night.
